Choosing a Hotel in Moscow: Tips for Tourists

Where can a tourist stay in Moscow? 18 cheap hotels and apartments

Moscow Center

Moscow, as it should be the capital, offers thousands of accommodation options for all budgets: luxury hotels, cheap apartments, cozy apartments with beautiful views, hostels, and even mansions.

In this article I will tell you where to stay in Moscow, so that it would be inexpensive but comfortable and close to attractions. I’ll recommend a reliable alternative to Airbnb and Booking, and tell you where to stay in Moscow with children.

Which districts should a tourist choose?

Apartment in Moscow Moscow district

In the capital there are 10 districts, which consist of 125 areas. The main tourist district – Central Administrative District, it has 10 districts. Lodging here is more expensive, but all the attractions are close. If you want to save money on accommodations, you can choose a place farther from the center, but still beautiful: Sokolniki, Izmailovo, Vernadsky Prospekt.

Here are the districts of Moscow where it is better for a tourist to stay:

Tverskaya – there are most sights in this area: Kitay-gorod, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Red Square, Kremlin, Children’s Shop at Lubyanka, GUM. Here you can find luxury stores, famous theaters and museums. The most expensive and luxurious hotels are situated here too:

Arbat, Moscow’s oldest pedestrian street, is located here and is a tourist attraction in itself. On Old Arbat you will find elegant mansions, sculptures, souvenir stores and plenty of cafes, while street performers create a bohemian atmosphere. After a stroll along Moscow’s main tourist street, I suggest turning to Novy Arbat with the Moscow House of Books, modern stores and restaurants.

Zamoskvorechye is a district on the opposite bank of the Moscow River from the Kremlin. Zamoskvorechye is recognized as a conservation area thanks to its cozy squares, fountains and magnificent buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries. Each mansion here is a masterpiece of architecture. The most beautiful streets are Bolshaya and Malaya Ordynka, Pyatnitskaya and Novokuznetskaya – take a walk along them to feel the spirit of the old merchant Moscow. There are also many museums of famous writers, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Marfo-Mariinsky Cloister.

Khamovniki is another oldest district of Moscow. The main places here are: the observation point on the Sparrow Hills, “Luzhniki”, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the Novodevichy Monastery. The metro is close and there are plenty of places to eat out.

The Presnensky district is a modern district of Moscow. This district is a modern district of Moscow with the Moscow City Towers, the Government House, the Planetarium, the Theatre on Malaya Bronnaya and the Moscow Zoo. There are plenty of housing options, and you can even choose to stay in an apartment in one of the skyscrapers in the City.

Yakimanka is a prestigious green part of Moscow. It is my favorite neighborhood – there is the Gorky Park, Neskuchny Sad, Tretyakov Gallery, “Garage” museum of modern art and a beautiful embankment of the Moskva River.

How to choose a hotel in Moscow

Are you coming to Moscow for business reasons, to visit friends or to have a rest and to change the scenery? In any case you will need to solve the problem with accommodation. It seems that all hotels in Moscow are either expensive or located too far from the attractions and inconvenient for visitors to the capital. We debunk the myths – we tell you how to choose a hotel in Moscow with a good rating and normal price.

Top 5 tips for choosing a hotel in Moscow

  1. Trust the reviews, but double-check.

Room

Everyone has their own needs and a hotel that is perfect for a married couple with small children may not appeal to young people. Some people need comfort and peace, others need to party and have fun.

Choosing a hotel in Moscow is worth starting with the geolocation of the locations you are interested in. If you came to the capital for work, look for a hotel closer to the office, so that you wouldn’t have to spend two or three hours every day on the road. Travelers are better to choose hotels in the city center in walking distance from the main attractions.

The hotel may only have breakfast, breakfast or dinner, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus extra drinks, brunch and snacks. All of this affects the price. Also, families with young children should check to see if the hotel has a children’s menu.

  1. Find out about the availability of additional services.

Profession: traveler. About our site and team

Here, too, everything is individual. Someone needs a pool and a spa, and someone needs parking and dry cleaning. Clarify whether the price includes daily cleaning, change of bed linen, towels, etc.

  1. Study the rating of the hotel and the number of stars.

Hotel room

How do I choose a hotel in Moscow based on reviews? To be honest, you should not take reviews to heart. Often they are subjective or bespoke, so also be guided by the number of stars. By the way, for the capital standard three stars is quite a good hotel with decent service and reasonable prices, while in Turkey, for example, hotels with three stars are not particularly equal to this level. Of course, if you need a hotel for a special occasion, then it is worth overpaying. But most often three or four stars is enough to relax in the capital with comfort.

Here is a quick look at some good hotels in the center of Moscow in the mid-range price segment

What hotel in Moscow to choose if you want to stay in comfort without overpaying? We have prepared a review of several worthy hotels:

  • “Arbat-house” – the hotel is located in the center, but in a very quiet cozy place, surrounded by historical buildings, you can walk to the Arbat for five minutes, and to the Kremlin – for ten. The highlight of the hotel is stained glass windows on the first floor. There are different variants of accommodation; the average price tag is 6-8 thousand rubles.
  • Boutique hotel “Stoleshnikov” – is located north of Red Square, a little more expensive, as for the night will have to pay from 8 to 12 thousand. Advantageous location, very close to the center, next to Tverskaya Street and Petrovka.
  • Hotel “Arbat” – the hotel is not in the very center, as “Arbat-House”, but many guests rate it even higher. Firstly, the price tag is the same, and secondly, from the hotel leads the famous pedestrian street, which is much closer to Arbat. There are many restaurants and cafes nearby.
  • “Lumiere” is a cozy hotel with designer renovation for a comfortable stay in the center of the capital. Guests are offered a continental breakfast, airport transfers, visa support and travel documents. The location of the hotel is such that you can reach the Red Square in a few minutes at a walking pace. The hotel has single, double and family rooms, also suites, business and VIP categories, rooms for honeymooners and for dates.

We will be glad to see you in the Hotel Lumiere – there is a perfect room for everyone!
