How to get from Dubai Airport to Downtown and Sharjah

From Sharjah airport to the city.

How to get to your hotel from Sharjah Airport cost-effectively and conveniently? What are the prices for cab fares? What are the buses into the city? How to get to Dubai and other emirates? Read the answers in our article.

Prices, schedules and other information in this article are current as of January 2022. Sharjah Airport is now open and flights from Russia fly here. Do not forget about the strict covid safety measures in transport in the UAE, read the article at the link above.

Cab

At Sharjah Airport there is a special tariff for cabs – 20 dirhams. The standard price per kilometer is 2 dirhams. See our Currency of the UAE article for the current AED exchange rate.

Meter in a cab in UAE

The cost of a trip to the hotel is from 30 to 60 dirhams, it depends on the location of the hotel. The principle is simple: the closer the hotel is to the sea, the more expensive it is. The most expensive hotels in the Al Khalidia area, which is close to the Sharjah Oceanarium and Al Khan Beach.

You don’t have to pay in dirhams, you can do so in euros or dollars. However, the rates offered by the cab drivers are very unbeatable. If the official exchange rate is 1:3.75 ($/dirham) cab drivers count for 1:3.5, which is often even worse. It is better to change a small amount at the airport, there are exchange offices with quite an acceptable rate. Read our article “How to change currency in the UAE.

There is no shortage of cabs at the airport. There is no need to book a cab in advance. But beware.

The most widespread deception of tourists

All cabs in the UAE must have and use a taximeter. Some cab drivers want to agree on a fixed fee, and there’s nothing wrong with that if the price is adequate.

But there are cases when the cab driver does not turn on the meter, brings tourists to the right point and starts demanding exorbitant money. Unfortunately, such cases are not uncommon. There have been cases when tourists were charged 200 dirhams and even 400 dirhams.

Be aware that any trip without a meter is against the law in the UAE. You can safely contact the police, the phone number is “999”. How and what to buy a local SIM-card at the airport, read our article “How to call from the UAE.

UBER and Careem – can I save money?

UBER and Careem operate in Sharjah, but you won’t be able to save much money. Now at the UBER rates, the trip will cost even more expensive, and at the Careem rates it is comparable to the price of an ordinary cab.

In addition, the UBER or Careem car will have to wait, while the cab is usually available immediately.

Book your transfer in advance

You can order a transfer online in advance, but it will cost 20-30% more than a regular cab. Why waste your time and energy looking for and ordering a transfer? We do not see the point.

Buses

City Bus in Sharjah

There are 4 city bus routes from the airport. All cost AED 8 for cash and AED 6 for the Sayer transport card. Running hours are from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. How the buses look like see the photo on the right, click on the photo to enlarge.

Route 14: Goes to the coast to the lake Khalid and the Al Majaz area. But then turns to the east and goes to the station Al Sharq in the eastern part of the city. The interval is 15-20 minutes.

Route 15. Goes to the coast to the terminal at Rolla Square, next to the Museum of Islamic Civilization. The interval of movement is 25-40 minutes.

Route 88. Also follows the coast to the terminal at Rolla Square, but a slightly different road. Traffic interval is 12-20 minutes.

Route 99. Goes to the coast to the terminal in Jubeil area, next to the central market. Traffic interval is 10-20 minutes, this route is round the clock.

It’s hard to know if any of these buses stop near your hotel. The best advice is to take the 15, 88, or 99 and go to Rolla or Jubeila. There you can take a cab to the hotel. That way you can save your money and take a cab to the hotel for 13,5-20 Dirhams.

Getting from Dubai Airport to Downtown and Sharjah

How to get from dubai airport

All ways to get from Dubai Airport to Downtown and Sharjah city center by subway, bus and cab. Useful information about timetables, prices and stops. Our personal experience and tips.

Dubai is pedestrian-unfriendly, and the public transport system is still developing. There are only two subway lines, the distances are enormous, there are wide roads and interchanges instead of sidewalks, and the bus routes and fares are a mess. We had to rack our brains to choose the right transport card and figure out the city bus routes. Let’s find out how to get from Dubai airport to the city center, as well as to Sharjah, without any hassle.

A simple solution! Don’t want to get caught up in the public transport system? Take a cab – it’s cheap in Dubai and it’ll save you a lot of time and nerves! We recommend to book a transfer from the airport on the service Kiwi Taxi, which we use ourselves, when we have no time to figure out the bus routes and subway fares.

How to get from Dubai Airport to downtown by subway

The Metro in Dubai is first class and well thought out! You can sense the care for passengers in everything. It’s a quick and convenient way to get from the airport to the city. There are only two lines to the metropolis – red and green. To get to the center of Dubai, take the red line – it goes along the coast. You will have to take a decent walk or a cab from the station to the hotel (if it is by the sea).

Tickets. The NOL Card is available. You can buy them from the machines in the subway lobby or at the airport. Pay by zone, the fares are complicated. Usually tourists buy NOL Red Card for 8,5 dirhams (it is valid for more than 2 zones), and then choose other fares based on the number of trips. There are variations of this card, for example, we took an unlimited day for 20 dirhams: it is valid in any transport and any area – very convenient! The card is attached at the entrance and exit. Check out the other types of NOL Card.

Travel time. 40 minutes or a little more. Trains run every 10 minutes. There are screens at stops that show train arrival times.

Schedule. The subway runs from 5:30 to midnight (until 1:00 on Thursdays and Fridays). Remember that the subway does not operate on Friday mornings and does not open until 10:00.

See here for a map of the metro.

Metro stations at the airport are at Terminals 1 and 3 – follow the signs. There is a free shuttle between terminals. If you arrive at terminal 2, you can take the shuttle to the other terminal and then take the metro. All stops are announced in English and Arabic and also written on the screens.

What you need to know. The first car is for Gold card holders and is marked in gold. Since the trains have no drivers, it is an attraction for tourists: they buy gold cards and ride in the first car with panoramic views. Gold cards cost twice as much as regular cards. The second (and half of the third) is for women and children only, marked in toxic pink. Men will be fined for riding in the women’s carriage.
