can you tell me the name and location of the pier in Male from which this ferry departs?

and another thing. we are arriving in Male on emirates on thursday at 15:05. while this and that, border, luggage, for 16:00 obviously do not have time. and it turns out only the fruit ferry? or during the day on some commercial ship will be possible to leave?

The pier at the fruit market, behind the presidential pier, if that’s more convenient (walk from the airport side of the ferry).

Extra boats usually go in before 4 pm, not later. Plus it’s not high season anymore, so not likely.

Ladies and gentlemen, please clarify on the fruit ferry: Since the ferry leaves at midnight (i.e., technically already the next day), it’s not entirely clear which days turn out to be “working” days. A little bit recklessly bought tickets with a Friday departure, and now I’m trying to figure out: is there a ferry from Male to Toddou on Friday night, or not? Also the return ferry: on Thursday night to Friday night is it going or not?

Hello, I have not received an answer. The owner of the hostel arranged the transfer locally. Speedboat+small boat transfer via RASDA. Back was a straight speedboat (lucky).

Speedboats sometimes go, sometimes not. Check the schedule with your hostel owner the day before. In general – don’t hesitate to ask the owner of the hostel about the transfer, the guys actively help.

The ferry, according to my observations, on Friday-Saturday night is GOOD, and Thursday-Friday is not. But I haven’t tested it, so I can’t guarantee it. Go to MALE, check it out.

Either way, I advise you not to linger on Male (hole) and by any means to break through to Todd or, alternatively, Rasda (there rent a place to stay for a day).

P. S. Toddu in our opinion – the perfect choice. Have a great time!

Ferries in Maldives: prices, routes, schedules, tips

State ferries are the cheapest transport in the Maldives. They connect the local islands where the locals live. Ferries do not run to resort islands designed for luxury vacation tourists. Where you can go by ferry in the Maldives, we’ll tell you below.

What you need to know about ferries in Maldives

Until recently, the Maldives did not have a stable transportation service. Residents had to travel between islands on their boats and boats or wait for a cargo ferry to arrive. But relatively recently there are regular public ferries.

  • Ferries in the Maldives can be roughly divided into two types: some transport residents from the capital to the atolls. Others run only within the atolls.
  • The ferry is the best option to get from Male to the nearest islands to the capital of the Maldives, or to move between islands located in one atoll. If the ferry is canceled, you can always hire a boat: it is not as hard on the pocket as a speedboat transfer to the outer islands. But it’s worth budgeting for contingencies.
  • A public ferry from Male’ sails three or four times a week to some of the atolls. Most ferries in the Maldives run short distances within the atolls. To some islands the ferry runs once a day.
  • Public ferries do not go to the resort islands. You can only get to them by speedboat, plane, seaplane.
  • Unfortunately, nothing is more unreliable than the Maldivian ferries. Transport can break down, and because of bad weather, flights are often postponed. There doesn’t have to be a storm at sea for a ferry to fail: small waves are enough.
  • Ferries do not operate on Friday.
  • It is better to book your ticket in advance, because the number of seats on the ferry is limited, especially on holidays. And you can not get on the ferry, if they sell out. If there is no ferry to the desired island, you can get to the nearest island by ferry and then take a private transfer by motor boat: it is much cheaper.
  • You cannot buy ferry tickets online.
  • On a public ferry you travel with locals.
  • Don’t forget to wear sunscreen, because you can get burnt on a trip across the Indian Ocean in a matter of minutes.
  • All ferries run only during daylight hours.
  • The ferries have toilets.
  • There is a high probability of getting seasick when traveling on the ferry, especially during the rocking. So it’s worth preparing and taking pills with you if you’re not sure yourself.
  • There is no business or first class on public ferries.
  • Public ferries allow two bags per person and one carry-on luggage.
  • Ferries are not air-conditioned. But thanks to the natural breeze, the journey will not be hot.

Where are the ferry terminals in Male

There are two main ferry terminals in Male:

  1. Villingili Ferry Terminal
  2. Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal

The Villingili Ferry Terminal in Male offers ferry connections to the popular islands of Maafushi, Digura, Difushi and more. This is the terminal from where departures to the local islands of the atoll and some other atolls. Villingili Ferry Terminal is located in the western part of the island of Male’.

The ferry departs from Villingili port on a schedule that also depends on the weather. The terminal gets its name from its close proximity to Villingili Island.

Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal is located on the east side of Male, closer to Hulhumale Island, where the airport is located. From here you can get from Male to the international airport of Whelan. It takes about 5 minutes to get there by ferry. You do not need to buy tickets in advance. The ferry leaves every 15 minutes.

Buying a ferry ticket

State ferries are one of the cheapest modes of transportation. The cost ranges from $5 to $30 per person one way from the capital city of Maldives, Male, to the island of your choice. The cost of the trip depends on the distance. Naturally, the road to the more remote atolls is more expensive.

Tickets for the ferry can be purchased at the ticket office.

How to book a ferry in the Maldives

Online booking is almost impossible: there are no services that allow you to buy a ferry ticket directly. But you can ask the staff of the hostel or hotel to purchase a ticket: such service can be provided for an additional fee. This is the best option, because although the ferries are quite large, the right ferry on the day of arrival may already be fully stocked, since the ferries do not depart hourly.

Ferry timetables and routes

Public ferries depart strictly on schedule (unless they are cancelled). They go to the islands within one atoll (a group of islands). Or go to the nearest atolls to Male’. In total, the Maldives are grouped into 7 zones, depending on the location of the islands. As a rule, you cannot go from one zone to another by ferry: the distances are long, and ferries move too slowly.

The first number in the route number indicates the zone in which the islands are located. So, Alifu atoll and Kaafu (Male) are located in zone 3. Therefore, the routes are 301, 302 and others.

Where to find the schedule

You can find the ferry schedule on the Maldives government website, as well as at the transport and travel companies. It is also posted on the stand in the port. Please note that on Maldivian websites the timetable must be read from right to left: this is a feature of the Maldivian language. You can check the timetable by visiting atolltransfer.com. To do this, you have to search for the name of the island or the itinerary. A detailed timetable is displayed, but it is not possible to book online.
