Where to stay in Paris – 17 apartments for 50 €

My selection of the coolest apartments in Paris for 50-90€ per night. A pile of cool and stylish options: loft, artist’s apartment, trendy apartments with a modern design. Take your pick!

Rent an apartment in Paris with Airbnb, rather than expensive hotels or overcrowded hostels. The value for money will be perfect. Here I’ll show you the coolest apartments in Paris that I collected when I was looking for accommodation for my trip. All of the options are fire! Let’s go!

I calculated the price per night including all service charges and cleaning fees – basically, this is the real bottom line.

Look for interesting tours in Paris on Sputnik and Tripster. Here are the most popular ones:

  • Walk around Paris – 20€.
  • The main treasures of the Louvre in two hours – €37
  • Montmartre and its streets – 30 €
  • Tours of Versailles – 59 €
  • Chateaux of the Loire Valley – 130€

Our Paris apartment for 50 €

I chose one of the cheapest and at the same time authentic options for our holiday. The apartment is typically Parisian and authentic, with a soul, not made purely for rent. The owner has gone somewhere and still rents out his house. In the apartment are all his things: books, postcards, souvenirs, a piano, masks, hats, and a bunch of stuff. Junk, some might say, but it all creates comfort and makes the house lively and warm. The neighbors in the entryway are French, not Chinese tourists. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful, it’s good!

  • 15 minutes from Montmartre.
  • 3 minutes to the subway. It takes 15-20 minutes to get to the center of the city.
  • The neighborhood is on the border of the city and the suburbs, slightly immigrant, but quiet.

UPD: It seems the owner is back and not renting yet (no available dates on the site). Probably will rent again later – check it out.

Eiffel Tower

An integral part of the city since 1889 and the symbol not only of Paris, but also the whole of France – the Eiffel Tower. Today it is considered the most visited place in the world. It takes its name from the French architect of the same name who designed it for the Paris World’s Fair at the end of the 19th century. After the exhibition, despite the protest of many local residents, it was decided to leave the tower. Since then its design has been controversial – some people are fascinated by it, others are disgusted with it. Apparently, you really should go to Paris, walk around the Champ de Mars and climb to the top viewing platform of the tower at 274 meters to appreciate its beauty.

Artist’s House – 64€

This is a special option! The apartment of a real artist, the house even contains his paintings (however, he asks guests not to mess around in this room). The apartment is stylishly decorated and located outside the city in a quiet area. There is a kitchen, Internet, and everything you need. It’s not far from the metro, but there’s an RER and a bus stop which takes about half an hour to get downtown.

The reviews are great and the owner has been given “superhost” status.

I have long looked at this option, but still chose another: a little cheaper and closer to the subway. Eh, it was a difficult choice!

In general, I recommend it. You will remember this house for a long time.

Acquisition of real estate

The cost of a residential meter in the French capital starts from 5 thousand euros, and finishes somewhere beyond imagination. In the most “interesting” places the price per meter is about 29 thousand euros. The larger the area, the lower rates.

To buy a home requires a French bank account and an individual tax number (NIF). Anyone can buy a home, regardless of citizenship.

Before viewing the object, as a rule, signed a bon de visite or “certificate of visit” ─ a document prohibiting the purchase without a mediator. Then the technical condition is inspected, the contract of intentions is drawn up and only then the contract of sale is signed. It is quite a complicated procedure, which cannot be done without the participation of real estate agents.

Ways to rent.

If you’re going to rent a house for a long time, services like Airbnb are no longer suitable. Renting an apartment in the French capital can be carried out independently or through a special firm. In case of individual selection saves money, but you will need to spend quite a lot of time and effort to find an accommodation in Paris on the websites of companies, specialized in apartment renting, or among personal ads, and to defend it among a variety of competitors, especially if the apartment is needed for a long period.

In this case, the knowledge of French will come in handy to find out how much a studio apartment costs. Saving on the agency’s help can cause unnecessary inconvenience due to the lack of knowledge of local specifics and simple rules, although for a week or for a daily rent it is an acceptable option. However, it is recommended to choose proven companies that will really help you find accommodation in Paris. Landlords also often try to arrange the deals directly, without intermediaries.

One of the important nuances of the agreement to save nerves and money is a home inspection with a written statement of all faults and damages, so that you do not have to pay later for the smallest defects caused by previous tenants.

In France there is an established system of social support, which many MPs oppose because it is unprofitable for the economy of the country. However, it can be used depending on the level of income, housing prices, tenant’s situation and other specifics. To apply for a state benefit, you must fill out a form on the website of the state social security responsible for subsidy payments and, after printing it out, send it through the postal service with your personal information.

Overview of Paris districts

The capital of France is divided into 20 administrative districts:

  • 1 district is the center of the city. Everything is at hand, but there is no cheap housing in the richest district.
  • District 2 – the financial and bohemian center of the city. In the small area between the Opera and the Louvre there are many good hotels.
  • District 3 is a pleasant, safe neighborhood with easy access to major attractions.
  • The 4th arrondissement is the oldest part and the official center of the city. It includes part of the Latin Quarter, Notre Dame Cathedral and the colorful Marais quarter.
  • The 5th arrondissement includes another part of the Latin Quarter and the Sorbonne. One of the best places for tourists.
  • The 6th arrondissement is beloved by Parisians themselves. It is not difficult to find stylish designer apartments.
  • The 7th arrondissement – the place where the Eiffel Tower rises. Tourists are always a lot, so you should book your favorite options in advance.
  • District 8 and 16 are known for expensive and prestigious housing. If the exorbitant prices do not scare you – you’re welcome!
  • District 9 is a nice place to live. Choose hotels or apartments far from the noise of Montmartre.
  • The 12th arrondissement is a quiet neighborhood with cheap hotels.
  • The 13th arrondissement is where the Asians live. A quiet neighborhood where budget housing is easy to find.
  • Districts 14, 15, 17 and 19 are not bad, but the center is a long commute.
  • District 18 is loud and fun. Young people like it, but families with children don’t.
  • Tourists are not recommended to stay in the 10th and 11th arrondissements of Paris. There are two train stations and densely populated areas with a high crime rate.

What to pay attention to

There are important considerations when choosing an apartment:

  1. In addition to the first month’s rent, you should be prepared to provide a deposit of one or two months of rent.
  2. Under French law, insurance for rented housing is mandatory. You will need a comprehensive policy covering multi-risk, including flood, fire, theft and natural disasters. It can be purchased from an insurance company, as well as in many banks.
  3. A guarantor may be required, and it should be a Frenchman.
  4. For long-term rentals, you will have to pay an annual housing tax (taxe d’habitation). As a rule, a deposit is used for this purpose.
  5. When choosing a location, it is worth paying attention to the index in the address. The last two digits indicate the district number.
  6. Furniture. A furnished apartment is equipped with everything necessary for living. In an unfurnished apartment of the amenities may be only a kitchen sink.
  7. A French studio apartment is not like a Russian one. In our country it is almost an elite housing. In Paris, this term means a small room where you can squeeze in a bathroom with a shower, or even a communal apartment.
  8. A two-story apartment here is a rebuilt apartment with high ceilings. As a result their current height may not be a source of enthusiasm at all.

Many buildings in the historic center are in disrepair. These are not the best options for long-term rentals.

In addition to the lease agreement will have to sign a complete inventory act (état des lieux). This gives a description of the furnishings left in the tenant’s possession. It is important to make sure that it exactly corresponds to reality, otherwise there may be disputes about the return of the deposit when moving out. You will also need a deed if you want to make repairs.

Accommodation in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district.

Another district of old Paris. This part of the city became especially popular thanks to the philosophers of the 20th century who lived in the area. Since then, the intellectuals prefer to live here. It is a very quiet, safe and beautiful district of the city. There are the best restaurants, and on the other side of the Seine stands the Louvre. By the way, d’Artagnan and the other three musketeers lived in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Their houses have survived, and who knows, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to find yourself in their apartments?

The seventh arrondissement is the respectable Palais Bourbon.

Where to stay in Paris: Advice and reviews

The Eiffel Tower, the Maison des Invalides, Napoleon’s tomb and the Champ de Mars are all attractions in the seventh arrondissement of Paris. There is also the Orsay Museum of Fine Arts and the Rodin Museum. The abundance of attractions makes the seventh arrondissement of Paris a real magnet for tourists. And the large number of ministries, embassies and international organizations – an important administrative center. By the way, the Russian Spiritual and Cultural Center was also opened here in 2021.

The area is comfortable to live in and safe. Live here can afford only wealthy Parisians. Seventh arrondissement hotels are mainly focused on wealthy tourists who are willing to pay for the luxury of living in the neighborhood of symbols of Paris.

Where we lived during our trip

During our trip to Paris, we stayed in the 9th arrondissement, at the Hotel Lorette – Astotel. We chose it based on price. The hotel is clean and the room, although small, was big enough for two. Good breakfast and very close to the metro. The area is very peaceful and quiet and there were very few immigrants. Walking distance only to Montmartre and the Moulin Rouge. To the Opera Garnier, after which is named 9 district, walk 20 minutes. We walked this distance once when returning from Disneyland by RER train to Auber station. You can’t walk to the Louvre anymore, the rest of the attractions are only by metro.

Freegan pony

Photo @[email protected]

Freegan pony restaurant is a place with a special philosophy of life based on the principle “Not to live to eat, but to eat to live.” Firstly, only vegetarian dishes are served here. Secondly, products for these dishes are never bought, but are collected every evening from Paris markets. Therefore, there is no menu at Freegan pony. The local chef improvises every night and cooks fantastic vegetarian dishes from what is in the kitchen.

Freegan pony is a restaurant that does minimal harm to the environment. Not only do they don’t eat animal food here, but they also recycle the plant-based food that wasn’t purchased at markets during the day. This is how the project fights for the environment and helps reduce waste.

The story of the place is that enthusiasts took over the space under the railroad bridge and opened this vegetarian cafe in a huge squat with no menus or prices. All food here is for doneness. The restaurant has a welcoming, almost gypsy atmosphere, accentuated by the interior. The furnishings of Freegan pony consist of assorted tables, armchairs, chairs, stools, and even benches. Concrete walls, faded carpets on the floor, overhanging chandeliers on the ceiling, and “horns” of tree branches on the wall.

The term “freeganism” refers to an alternative lifestyle that questions the economic model, where a gigantic waste industry harms the environment.

The exact address of the restaurant is not known. It is located in the Place Auguste Baron, There is a map on the establishment’s website with a pointer www.freeganpony.com

How you can avoid the difficulties I encountered.

The shadow of the Eiffel Tower from the Eiffel Tower Book accommodation in advance. Yes, it does sometimes happen that day-of owners will drop the price of accommodations dramatically. However, popular tourist spots obviously don’t count.

If I had booked accommodation a couple of months in advance instead of 2 weeks in advance, I would definitely have found a lot more attractive options for the same money or cheaper.

Look for accommodations on different services. I used to always use Booking to book lodging. It usually offers options that are specifically for rentals.

In the case of Airbnb, on the other hand, they often offer their own apartments when they go somewhere. Not a bad source of extra income.

I looked for accommodation on Booking this time, but two weeks before the trip there were no more apartments, and I did not want to live in a soulless hotel in such a city.

Read ALL reviews carefully. Often some important nuances are buried in the depths, and I found them myself when I reread the comments on our accommodation after the trip.

Kolya at Disneyland.

The accommodations will be worse than the pictures. If you are going to book an apartment or hotel through a service like this, keep in mind that accommodations are almost always worse than the pictures.

:-)

The only question is how much worse

Consider the conditions of the reservation and cancellation. If something goes wrong, it’s important for you to understand how to get your money back. On Airbnb, there are at least 5 options for self-cancellation.

If there is a problem with the owner and the service often promises a refund within 10 days. Take this into account if you are strapped for cash.

Arm yourself with patience and wit. Respond quickly to any messages from the service, and be prepared to call the support team and assert your rights.

In short, keep your finger on the pulse before you check in, during your stay, and even after. My experience has shown that even after the trip, you can run into difficulties.
