Cappadocia Attractions

Ihlara Valley

Ihlara Valley is 15 km long between the villages of Ihlara and Selime. The cliffs in the canyon are 150 meters high and provide coolness and refreshment even on the hottest days. The Melendez River flows along the bottom, giving moisture to the lush vegetation. Since the IV century, Christians began to hollow out the cave temples in the walls of the gorge. There are frescoes of different church styles – Armenian, Syrian, Coptic.

Balloon Festival

The Cappadocia Balloon Festival is an event that attracts tens of thousands of tourists to Turkey. From April to October when the weather is fine, colorful balloons fly into the sky. In summer the flights take place from 5 to 6 am, in spring and autumn – an hour later. Usually the balloons rise to 500 meters, with some taking off as high as 1,000 meters. From high up in the rays of the rising sun all the beauty of Cappadocia opens.

The Valley of Love

The Valley of Love in Cappadocia stretches for 4 km in the Baglidere Gorge. You can get to the beginning of the walking route from the village of Uchhisar. Just behind the gemstones store begins a path that leads into the realm of cosmic scenery.

Rock Hotels

Cappadocia is a land of caves and underground cities. You can find rock hotels in Göröme, Üçhisar, Ortahisar and Ürgüp for immersion in history and underground atmosphere. The rooms are equipped according to modern requirements, but the layout of the hotels resembles a huge beehive with transitions to different levels and access to the roof, where there is usually a viewing platform. The most impressive views are from the rooftops of Uçhisar hotels.

Goreme National Park

A large part of Cappadocia is the Goreme National Park. Millions of years ago, this area was covered with volcanic ash, which over time has turned into bizarre rocks. Peribakas (so called rock formations made of tuff) resemble giant fish, mushrooms with triple hats, fairy palaces, sword blades or sabers.

Caymacles

Kaimakli is the underground city of Cappadocia, which once housed up to 15,000 inhabitants. The system of rooms discovered during the excavations is connected by tunnels and arranged on several levels. The entrances to them were hermetically “sealed” with a stone disk. The first floor was occupied by stables. The second level revealed the ancient church with a nave, apses, an underground font and an ancient cemetery.

Tourist reviews of popular excursions

The itinerary itself is good, but Ahmet does not really serve the material well. Whether it is a lack of profound knowledge of the Russian language, or the folding of speech. As soon as the guide switches to English there is more information. In Russian, unfortunately, this was lacking. Really enjoyed the underground city and Selim monastery. There was a delicious lunch and a beautiful panorama of Göreme.

Good afternoon, evening or night) we took a balloon flight over Cappadocia with Tatiana on 30.08.2022. All very quick, we took all the questions we had and solved them online immediately. The transfer from the hotel we organized, everything went great :))), And it is worth a try, we recommend everyone :) And by the way it came out to us much cheaper than the vparival tour operator. All on a note not to overpay the tour operator and hotel guide, and better to use Tripset)) Regards Sergey and Anastasia.

All excellent! We were warmly welcomed at the airport, brought to the airport in comfort, answered our questions clearly. And inexpensive! We will use this service again and recommend to everyone!

The guide Mustafa was very helpful and helped us to enjoy the tour. I still have a desire to visit Cappadocia again and see the rest of the sights, definitely with the same guide.

Everything was good, the tour was led by a guide of a third-party firm Murat. But everything went perfectly, very positive, soulful guide. If they offer him, go at ease) All enjoyed it, fed lunch, all the entrance tickets are included.

I had a wonderful tour with my guide, Ali, who was very knowledgeable and interesting! Also Fırat helped us organize our balloon flight – everything was very professional and clear.

We aggregate Russian-speaking tours of tour operators, travel agencies and private guides in Cappadocia. We compare similar excursion programs by reviews, rating, cost and recommend the best of the proposals.

Cappadocia Excursions: Top 10 best tours with prices and reviews

Cappadocia is so unconventional and so alluring, bizarre rock formations, Martian landscapes, colorful valleys and much, much more. The list of things to see in Cappadocia is endless. To cover all of Cappadocia’s attractions and places of interest, you would have to spend at least a week, if not more, here.

In this article we will tell you about the best excursions in Cappadocia, you will learn what to see and do here. The information will be especially relevant for those who are going to Cappadocia just for a couple of days and want to cover everything to the maximum.

Excursions most often we look for on Tripster, there is a large variety of interesting options, all tours are in Russian, and there are also many individual tours with local guides. You can also look at Sputnik – sometimes come across fascinating options.

Ballooning in Cappadocia

Ballooning is what most tourists seek to get into Cappadocia for. The balloon flight is undoubtedly the top and best-selling excursion. Just imagine how dozens of colorful balloons rise into the sky every morning, and then slowly fly over the most picturesque valleys and bizarre rocks of Cappadocia. And the most apotheosis is meeting the dawn in the sky in a balloon basket. The spectacle is simply amazing, better to experience once than hear a hundred times.

A detailed article on how to fly balloons in Cappadocia is already on our blog. There tell about the current prices, when and with whom it is better to fly, how the flight itself is, how to dress, share beautiful photos and videos.

The cost of excursions in balloons in 2021 because of the pandemic has decreased significantly, the prices start from only 60 € per person (it’s just a gift, compared with what it was before, when the cost of the flights started from 150 € and higher). So if you’ve been dreaming of a balloon ride for a long time, now is the best time to do it. The cost of tours depends largely on the number of passengers in the basket and the firm organizer.

Recommendation: It is better to book the flight in advance for the very first day of your stay in Cappadocia, as the flights are often cancelled and postponed due to the weather. It would be a shame to come here for 1-2 days and not have a flight.

Cappadocia Valley Excursions

Excursion agencies offer 3 different routes through the Cappadocia valleys – red, green and blue tours. All are clearly planned and include visits to the top attractions. However, all of these beautiful locations are heavily scattered throughout Cappadocia and you simply can’t get to most of them on your own, so buying a tour is almost the only option.

However, we personally visited all these places by ourselves because we went to Cappadocia by rented car, so there was just no need to take a tour in the valleys. But we had to thoroughly prepare for the trip, what was the only thing to understand all the names of these valleys and rock monasteries, and then put all the points on the map.

Rent a car in Turkey, we recommend the service Myrentacar – a reliable aggregator of local car rental companies with a very favorable rental price. If you are still afraid to rent a car, read about our experience of renting a car in Turkey, and reviews →.

In short, if you do not want to spend time on the preparation of routes, and if you also without a car, it is better to buy a ready-made tour guide will tell and show you everything, make an excursion into the history, pay attention to detail. Honestly, we were a little lacking in the information component of our trip.

Red Tour of Cappadocia

The Red Tour takes you to interesting places in the northern part of Cappadocia. On this tour, you visit the sights closest to Göreme (the most touristy town in Cappadocia). The red tour is popular with those who come to Cappadocia just for one or two days and want to see at least something. However, if you plan to rest here for several days, some of the sights included in the itinerary can be visited on your own, as you can get to them on foot.

Red tour covers the following interesting places:

  • Göreme Open Air Museum (there are rock monasteries and many well-preserved frescoes);
  • Uchhisar Fortress (the highest rock in Cappadocia and also an excellent observation point);
  • Chavushin (the oldest settlement of Cappadocia, of interest are the old Greek houses, as well as the fortress of Chavushin with observation points);
  • Avanos (it is a neighboring town, it is very cozy, famous for pottery workshops, tourists are usually taken to some pottery store to buy souvenirs);
  • Pashabag Valley, also known as monks’ valley (here we see the bizarre mushroom-shaped rocks);
  • The Valley of Dervent, also called the Valley of the Imagination (there are interesting rocks in the shape of animals, for example you can see a stone camel, a chicken, kissing pigeons);
  • Urgüp village and Uç Güzeller cliff (another village, here we see the bizarre rock “3 beauties”;
  • Viewpoint on the Valley of Love (perhaps the most photographed valley of Cappadocia, this is where the rocks in the form of phallic symbols).

For example, in some individual tours, you can also visit the rocky complex Zelve (personally, we liked it very much, there are few people, beautiful ancient churches, fancy stairs and transitions). And as part of this tour, you can also visit the underground city of Kaymakli, and then meet the sunset with a view of the Pink Valley (we were there and there, I definitely recommend it, both places are very cool).

Blue Tour of Cappadocia

The Blue Tour goes through the most untouristy, remote and little-visited places of Cappadocia, but it is no less picturesque. The thing is that mass tourists come to Cappadocia for 1-2 days and go more on red and green tours, and simply do not have time here, and in vain.

The blue tour covers the following interesting places:

  • Ortahisar Fortress (very photogenic, you can go up and admire the beautiful scenery from the observation deck);
  • Mustafapasha village (Greek village in Turkey, a very cozy and quiet place, the appearance of the village is not like other Cappadocia villages);
  • Keshlik cave monastery;
  • Tashkinpasha Madrasah;
  • The Ancient City of Sobesos (the only Roman city in Cappadocia, you can see interesting mosaics and ancient baths);
  • Soganli Valley (an abandoned cave settlement, here you can look into the ancient churches – Serpentine, Wooden, Karabash and St. Barbara);
  • The underground city of Derinkuyu or Kaymakly (choice);
  • Pigeon Valley;
  • Viewpoint in Göreme;
  • Tasting of local sweets or jewelry and stone workshop (depends on the program).

The tour starts from the center of Göreme, and there is a free transfer to the beginning of the route from Ürgüp and Üçhisar.

Personal experience: Since we had a lot of days planned for Cappadocia, we had time not only to drive over the valleys but also to walk through them ourselves. It was a very cool experience, we had a lot of fun. It is one thing to look at the valley from the observation decks, and quite another thing to walk through it yourself, it is completely different emotions, you notice new interesting details. However, with a guide, probably more interesting and certainly easier. Frankly speaking, a few times we lost track and wandered decently among all these rock formations, in search of the right direction.

Cost of the tour: individual tour – 165 € for a group of up to 3 people, and if you are more than that, then 45 € per person (the price includes guide’s accompaniment on the route, lunch without drinks, and wine at sunset)

Duration of the tour: ~ 8 hours

Length of the route: 17 km.

In the photo: meeting the sunset with a view of the Red Valley, we walked 20 km that day.

Excursion on quad bikes

An ATV excursion is a great way to experience the beauty of Cappadocia in an unconventional way. For those who do not like to walk for a long time, but want to immerse themselves in the atmosphere as much as possible, it is the perfect option. Tours are held at sunset so that you can view the valleys of Cappadocia in its most advantageous light. On such a tour, you’ll ride through some of Cappadocia’s most scenic spots – the Pink and Red Valleys, the Valley of Love, as well as the Saber, Mushroom and Honey Valleys. Some tours also include a stop for a barbecue. Tour itineraries may vary. There are also short walks on quad bikes in the valley of love. Conducted in the daytime.

Cost of the tour: ~ 40€ per person (short tours in one valley are 25€ per person).

Duration of the tour: 2-4 hours depending on the program and the route.

In addition to ATV riding, there is an opportunity to go on a jeep safari through the valleys, you will admire the secluded and inaccessible corners of Cappadocia. Individual tour for a group of up to 4 people will cost 80 €.

Horseback Riding in Cappadocia

The symbol of Cappadocia is not only balloons, but also horses. You would be surprised, but the name of the region is translated from Ancient Persian as “the land of beautiful horses.” Obviously, horseback riding in Cappadocia is also very popular. Such a tour is a great opportunity to feel like a fairy tale hero and ride through bizarre landscapes on horseback. In the tour, you will visit the most popular valleys, the Sword Valley, the Valley of Love, see the panorama of the Pink and Red Valleys, and the village of Chavushin. The route depends on the chosen program. The advantage is that this tour is suitable even for those who have never ridden a horse.

Cappadocia Photo Tour

Cappadocia itself is very picturesque, so you can take great snatch pictures here like nowhere else. However, it is often very difficult to find the right locations, angles, accessories, and so on. Especially this excursion girls like, they will bring you to the most beautiful photoshoots, will give tips on posing, build the right frame and light, and even if necessary, will give a beautiful dress and accessories to rent.

There are several versions of photowalks, for example there are short walks of 1-1,5 hours at sunrise or sunset where you will be photographed against a background of balloons, retro cars, carpets, photos on a swing, with a view of the beautiful valleys, etc., in short, there are many options. If you want, you can go to a ranch and take pictures with the horses.

I admit that I regret that we spared money for a photo shoot, because you can not make such pictures on your own, without professional help.
