How to get from Rome to Florence. 4 proven ways
Today I want to tell you about the best way to get from Rome to Florence. I have experienced each of these ways many times on my own, so I have a lot to tell.
Rome and Florence are must-see cities when visiting Italy. Plus, they are so close that after having breakfast in Rome, you can go to Florence and spend the whole day there.
There are 4 ways to get from Rome to Florence: by train, bus, car, or plane.
- By train – the fastest and most comfortable way;
- By bus – the cheapest and longest way;
- By car – the most romantic and free. By car you can stop by small colorful Italian cities on the way, making a mini-tour through the region of Tuscany.
- By plane is the most unfortunate. Expensive and long relative to other ways because of documents and luggage checks.
If you already know which way you want to travel, click on the right option to explore it in more detail. If not, explore all the options and you’re sure to find your best option.
How to get from Rome to Florence by train
The fastest way to get from Rome to Florence is to take the high-speed train. It takes only 1.5 hours to get from the center of Rome to the center of Florence. Any other way of traveling between the cities will take you at least twice as long.
The high-speed trains run about every 20-30 minutes throughout the day from about 6 am to 9 pm.
What you need to know before buying a train ticket
There are 2 types of trains between Rome and Florence: high-speed and regular trains. High-speed trains cover a distance of 300 km between cities in 1.5 hours. They do not stop anywhere, stopping only in Rome and Florence.
Regular trains are slower and often stop. Because of that the travel time stretches for 3-4 hours.
I always choose only high-speed trains, once did not have time to book a seat, and had to use the normal train (Regionale).
Since I bought the tickets the day of the trip I paid 20€ for the normal train instead of 40€ for the fast train. And although I saved money, the train took twice as long, so I walked around all day a little crumpled. I won’t say anything about the comfort level.
So you need to decide what’s more important to you – time or money.
If you choose a ticket in advance, be sure to take the high-speed train – the price will be about the same as the normal.
The second point I often get asked is which company to choose, since there are two: Trenitalia and Italo. Italo offers only high-speed trains, while Trenitalia also offers normal trains, otherwise there are no particular differences.
And the last question that may arise, which railway station is better to leave from Rome. From Rome to Florence trains leave from two stations: Termini and Tiburtina.
The main difference between the stations is their location:
- Termini is in the center of the city and to get to/from the station, you can use either the red or blue metro lines.
- Tiburtina is slightly east of the center and can only be reached using the blue metro line.
If you live in the center of Rome or near the Vatican (the most common option), the Termini station is closer.
To summarize, for example:
- I need a ticket in 3 weeks, then I have no problem choosing the express train;
- The campaign is not important, since both have high-speed trains;
- I live in the center of Rome, then it’s easier to get to Termini station.
With this information we go look for the right tickets.
How to buy train tickets from Rome to Florence
You can book train tickets in 2 main ways.
- The first – buy tickets in machines at the station – this option I do not recommend. Much more convenient to already have tickets in hand and go to your train, rather than wasting time buying and waiting.
- And the second – book tickets online. – This option I always use and recommend everyone. It’s convenient, fast and safe.
How to use ticket vending machines
If you decide to order tickets locally, you’ll find many ticket machines at Termini and Tiburtina train stations. Unfortunately, they don’t have Russian in them, but they’re not that difficult to use.
If you know basic English, you should be able to order a ticket. The machines accept payment by cash and bank card.
If you can not cope with the machine – look for a cashier. All cashiers in large train stations know English.

Should I buy tickets in advance?
Of course you can buy train tickets on the day of travel. This option is suitable if you are not sure on what day and time you want to go.
But during the tourist season the number of seats on the train may be insufficient. In addition, if you book in advance, you can buy a ticket at a very good discount, and the earlier – the greater the discount.
If you decide to take a regular (regionalale) train from Rome to Florence – it is important to know that when you board, you need to validate your ticket at the yellow or green validators that you will find at the beginning of each train.
You don’t need to validate anything on the high-speed trains, as you have the seat number on your ticket.
