I did not expect much from a provincial town on the Azov Sea, but Taganrog turned out to be curious and even special. It is very different from the southern seaside towns: there is intellectuality and history in everything. And although the sea laps nearby, there is no hint of resortism in its center, as if the city is above it.
As I walked the beautiful streets of Taganrog, I had the feeling that I was transported to pre-revolutionary Russia, and comparisons to St. Petersburg and Odessa came to mind. I was surrounded by old, dilapidated houses, streetcars rattling by. It was nice to walk through the shady streets and the frozen in time, such a peaceful city. It still makes me happy to think that such a special city survived in our hectic south.
Alas, all this beauty and coziness is preserved only on a small patch in the center. Outside of it Taganrog does not differ from other provincial cities, and the tourist has nothing to do in the city more than two or three days. Well, the little that you have is already quite a lot.
In Taganrog there are a lot of very beautiful buildings – both restored and dilapidated. In the photo – the Art Museum. Another beautiful building. There is a lot of greenery in the center of the city. Taganrog has a lot of beautiful sailing ships that you can take to the sea. Port.
A bit of history
What makes Taganrog special is not only its intelligence, but also its history. The historical heritage is clearly valued here and try to keep it, because it attracts tourists, and the sea is a second matter.
What is interesting about the history of Taganrog? Because many influential and famous people found their light here. In general, the first ancient settlement of Greeks in place of Taganrog was in the 7-6 centuries BC. There were Scythians, Khazars and Turks, merchants from Genoa and Pisa traded here. But the really significant events for Taganrog began during the reign of Peter I, when the king ordered to build a harbor and a fortress on the cape Tagany Horn, to the military ships could easily enter the port. Thus Taganrog was founded in 1698. As it is written in Wikipedia, “Taganrog is the first city in the history of Russia, built according to a pre-designed master plan. Taganrog Harbor is the first in the world built not in a natural bay, but on the open sea.”
Alas, Peter’s fortress had to be destroyed in 1711 under the terms of the Peace of Prut concluded with the Turks. However, during the reign of Catherine II, the fortress and the navy restored, and Taganrog was given the status of a merchant and port city, not a military one, and began to develop.
Emperor Alexander I died in Taganrog, visited Pushkin and Tchaikovsky, was born and lived Chekhov and Faina Ranevskaya. The city is especially proud of Chekhov.
The monument to Peter I especially looks spectacular at sunset. As far as I understand, one day there will be a museum of Faina Ranevskaya. But for now there is only her sculpture.
Chekhov – Taganrog brand
There are many places in the city connected with Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. We visited the house where he was born and looked at the family shop where Chekhov helped his father sell goods. We went to the fishing quarter of Bogudonia, where the young writer bathed and drank Santurino wine with friends, and took a look at the Chekhov Theater. Also named after Chekhov are the Literary Museum in the gymnasium where the writer studied, the street, the theater, the square and the library. If you are interested, look at the Chekhov places on the map.

Beaches and sea in Taganrog
As I have already written, resort life in Taganrog is underdeveloped, but it is there. The beaches are sandy, but far from ideal. We visited three beaches in Taganrog: Central, Sunny and Eliseevsky. There is also Primorsky beach near the park, but we did not go there. Everywhere there is a minimal infrastructure.
Most often people visit the Eliseevsky beach because it is the most comfortable one. There is soft sand, chaise lounges and umbrellas, a water park “Azure”, a dining room, entertainments, but I was strongly confused by the pipe going into the sea.
As you probably know, the Azov Sea is very specific – muddy shallow water, which in July and August also blooms. In Taganrog it is dirty, I would not swim. The locals write that the plants dump all the wastes into the sea and do not advise to swim. So if you want to relax by the sea, it is better to choose the resorts of the Crimea or the Krasnodar Territory, and Taganrog to come for a cultural holiday.

Prices for housing in Taganrog
In Taganrog, accommodation prices are not high, and there are almost no star hotels. In Taganrog there is one Golden Horse Hotel 4* and a few three-star hotels among which stand out “Greenwich Park” on the first line and “Ida” in the city center.
There are many guest houses and apartments for rent in town. We stayed in a lovely guest house “On Italian Lane” in the center of Taganrog for 2,500 rubles per night. The interiors are pleasant, clean and the hostess is charming. Very highly recommended!
Prices for holidays in Taganrog in the middle of summer 2022 (room for two / three per night):
|The simplest accommodation without amenities||From 800 ₽|
|Decent guest houses or apartments||1300 – 2700 ₽|
|Rooms in 3* and 4* hotels||from 3,000 ₽|
During our extensive audit of resorts in southern Russia, we found that local hoteliers often cheat vacationers by buying positive reviews on travel sites, including Bucking. So read the reviews carefully before booking, especially the negative ones – they will tell you a lot of interesting things. Also see how their hosts respond to criticism: if they are rude, sarcastic, and hit on the tourist, then feel free to pass by. We always advise to book accommodation in advance, rather than look for it on the spot, otherwise you will get a mediocre option, and even overpay.
Look for hotels on the service Hotelluk – it will be more reliable and profitable, because he is looking for discounts on different sites. Learn how to book a hotel cheaper.
Look for accommodation in the private sector at bed and breakfast.ru – it’s a convenient and reliable service with real photos and reviews of tourists. You may rent an apartment, a room, or a house there directly from the owners. Do not think you can easily rent an accommodation when you arrive at the station, as they usually offer overpriced apartments in uncomfortable areas with minimum amenities. Book accommodation 2-3 months before your trip.

Food Prices in Taganrog
Surprisingly, Taganrog turned out to have a lot of nice places to eat. There are especially a lot of them in the center. Prices are usual: in a cafe you can eat for 500-800 ₽ per person, in a restaurant – from 1000 ₽.
We regularly went to the canteen “Borschi ishchi” on Petrovskaya Street, 67. The average bill there is 190 rubles, and everything is delicious. The interior is not at all canteen-like but as in a cafe: table lamps, comfortable chairs, reproductions of old photos in frames, pleasant music.
We really wanted to go to the famous art-café “Freken Bock” at 24, Turgenevsky Lane. It has an interesting interior and delicious coffee and desserts. The prices are higher than average, but the cafe always has a lot of customers and there are even queues, so we never got there.
According to reviews, on vacation in Taganrog, popular among tourists are the old cafe-confectionery “Red Mac” on Petrovskaya, 68A, Sapore Italiano on Petrovskaya, 49 and “Madame Ku-Ku” on Petrovskaya, 51.
Many tourists during their vacation in Taganrog prefer to cook for themselves. We also bought products in the supermarket to save time for breakfast, such as cheese, olives, bread, sausage. The assortment was surprising: on the shelves there were sanctioned products, which can be found only in Europe.
The dining room “Borschi iShchi” was more like a cafe, but the prices were the same as in a canteen.
What to see in Taganrog
There are not so many sights in Taganrog, so there is nothing to do more than 2-3 days. Here’s what to see on vacation:
Chekhov House. The tiny house where Chekhov was born and where the family lived for a year and a half surprised us with its ascetic but cozy furnishings. Tiny beds, chintz curtains, a samovar at the head of the table, a lampstand in front of an icon – everything is very nice and neat. Admission costs ₽100.
Chekhov’s Shop. Also a museum dedicated to the writer. This is where Anton Chekhov lived from age 9 to 14. There was a grocery store on the first floor where he helped his father trade. Admission costs ₽100.
Bogudonia. A colorful fishing village where not everyone would dare to go, but I advise you to visit it – it’s a different Taganrog. We wandered through the confusing narrow streets, marveled at dilapidated overgrown houses mixed up with residential, which chaotically cling to each other, and bewildered, how do people live here? Be sure to go down to the beach, from below the houses look even more unusual. In the reviews, tourists write that in the village you can meet packs of stray dogs and get lost in the maze of streets – none of this happened to us.
Pushkin embankment . Here you will see several sights at once: the embankment itself on which it is pleasant to walk, the stone Delpadovsky ladder constructed in 1823, and a sundial.
In addition, Peter and Frunze streets are a treasure trove of attractions. Here are concentrated most of the architectural monuments. Also interested in Grecheskaya Street, Chekhov Street and alleys.
What else to see in Taganrog:
- Alferaki Palace – the most beautiful building, which houses the Museum of Regional Studies.
- Tchaikovsky House Museum – a mansion from the 1870s.
- Historical square with a monument to Peter I and a beautiful view of the port.
- The Round House is for the lovers of Soviet constructivism.
- Seaside Park. This old Soviet park is just a nice place for a walk.
- Chekhov’s literary museum in the gymnasium where he studied.
- The European quarter is a small cul-de-sac, styled like Europe, with cute cafes and stores.
- The cell of the blessed elder St. Paul of Taganrog.
- Museum of Art.
- Museum of town planning and life.
- Drama theater.
Taganrog will be interesting for lovers of outdoor activities, and most of the resort’s entertainment is marine:
- Go yachting, boating, kayaking or canoeing.
- Go surfing or windsurfing.
- Rent a jet ski or boat.
- Learn to stand on a sup board.
Go karting on the waterfront, or skydive at the flying club. Also very popular entertainment is the baths and spa hotel “Greenwich Park” and the water park “Azure”.
If you came to Taganrog with a child, visit the zoo in Gorky Park, go to the performances in the circus “Azovie” and ride the water slides in the water park “Azure”. The ticket for an adult to the water park costs 700 rubles, and for a child under 150 cm – 400 rubles. Kids under the age of 3 are allowed for free. There are “happy hours” when tickets are cheaper.
One evening we watched the training of young kayakers. With children you can go to Gorky Park and ride the Ferris wheel.
Excursions in Taganrog
During a vacation in Taganrog in 2022 I advise to take a sightseeing tour to learn the history of the city – and it is impressive for such a small town! Knowing the history and legends of Taganrog, you will look at the city in a different way and the more interesting it will be later walks through it.
All tours we buy only on our favorite service Tripster. There you can read real reviews of tourists, so it is easy to choose a good and interesting tour. Prices are lower than the street vendors, and there is more reliability. In addition, there are unique author’s tours that will show you the country from a new side. I heartily recommend it.

When to go on vacation in Taganrog
If you are interested in a beach vacation in Taganrog, then come in June and the first half of July. At this time it is warm and the sea is warm, but not yet in bloom. In mid-July it gets very hot, up to +30 ° C and above. In August it’s better not to come – the water is in bloom. However, it can bloom even earlier. This happens when the water reaches a temperature of +24 ° C.
The high season lasts until the end of August, and the velvet season – until the end of September. In the fall, the shallow sea cools quickly, and in October it is already cold to swim.
According to reviews from tourists, family vacation at sea in Taganrog good in June and early fall, when the weather is warm and the beaches are less people.
If you need an excursion, I advise April and May when everything is in bloom, and about the second half of October when the trees turn yellow and you can walk, rustling the leaves. September is also good, because still in the summer green and warm. In July and August in the city is too hot and uncomfortable to go on excursions.
In the middle of September, people are still swimming.

Who will like rest in Taganrog
Let’s summarize. You have already realized that we liked Taganrog. I believe that it is a colorful and interesting to explore the city, which is worth giving 2-3 days. It differs favorably from many southern resorts, where except for the banal and beach entertainment and nothing. So if you like the cultural and excursion vacation, you Taganrog will do.
But in terms of beach recreation Taganrog strongly loses even to the neighboring Eisk, not to mention the Black Sea resorts. If you want to swim in the clear sea, you just do not want to Taganrog.
For beautiful nature is better to go to rest in the Greater Sochi or the Crimea. Steep, big and smart water parks and attractions at the resort is also not. For the sake of them it is better to go to Anapa, Gelendzhik or Sochi.
The sea in the city is shallow and muddy. Look how far from the shore, and people are walking knee-deep in water!
