Florence, the capital of Tuscany and the former capital of the Italian Republic, was founded in 59 BC by Julius Caesar himself.

Florence is called the “Cradle of the Renaissance” for a reason. Great personalities lived and worked here, including Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, and Galileo.

I will take you on a tour of the city and show you the places of importance and the life of the locals.

Attractions in and around Florence

The Ponte Vecchio Golden Bridge

The Ponte Vecchio, which means “Old Bridge”, was built in 1345 on the site of an ancient bridge crossing that was swept away by a flood on the Arno River. The three-span footbridge is supported by wide stone arches resting on two powerful pylons. From shore to shore the bridge is densely built up with two-story houses of craftsmen, a few huts are situated on platforms overhanging the water.

Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi encompasses an entire street overlooking Piazza della Signora. In the 16th century it was home to the offices of the town magistrate, the magistrate’s chambers, chapels, workshops and residences of Florence’s craftsmen’s guilds. At the will of Duke Cosimo I, the architect Giorgio Vasari rebuilt the buildings, combining them with a single facade into a complex that housed the artistic legacy of the Medici.

Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) was built from 1296 to 1436. Its appearance harmoniously combines the stylistics of the late Gothic and early Renaissance. In the XV century it was the largest Christian church in Europe. The huge dome that crowns the structure can be seen from anywhere in the city. At the base of its marble lantern is a circular balcony overlooking the historic center.

Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is the centuries-old center of Florence’s political life. It is dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio and its 94-metre high Arnolfo Tower. The palace has an equestrian monument to Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de’ Medici by Giambologna.

Santa Maria Novella Basilica

The Basilica di Santa Maria Novella was founded in 1279 and was completed in the middle of the 14th century. The temple, which looks like a carved casket, is a mixture of Tuscan Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. The facades and interiors are finished in white marble, contrasting with the dark green serpentine.

Palazzo Vecchio

The Palazzo Vecchio has served as the seat of government in Florence for more than seven centuries. The main building overlooking the Piazza della Signoria has become the city’s landmark. Construction began in 1299 on the ruins of a Roman amphitheater. In the cellars, the architects preserved several underground chambers of the ancient structure. These casemates were used as a prison.

Interesting tour to get to know the “outback” of Italy and of course to explore the Italian culinary scene. I booked a tour for my mom and her friend. They were very pleased with it and told me to write a review. They were first time in Florence, they are not the most experienced travelers. The tour was very good, but they were met at the train station, they were taken everywhere, told and shown where they can try the best steaks. Thank you so much!

We went to the Pitti Palace with our wonderful guide, Alexandra. She has an excellent understanding of art and infects others with her energy. The tour exceeded our expectations.
