First time in Turkey. What you need to know and where to go

First time in Turkey: What do you need to know?

We have been to Turkey four times already. We share our observations and advice with those who go to Turkey for the first time. What you need to know how to behave and where best to go to fall in love with this wonderful country!

Where to go for the first time in Turkey

Resorts in Turkey are very similar in climate, so everywhere will be warm and comfortable. They differ in status and prices, size, infrastructure and quiet. For example, Cirali – sleepy and small, Kemer – quiet, but developed, and Antalya – big and quite noisy. Belek and Bodrum are considered prestigious resorts, Alanya – the most inexpensive.

We lived in Kemer – there is an ideal ratio of tranquility, development of the resort and beautiful nature. And in general if you want to fall in love with Turkey, I advise you to go to Istanbul for the first time – by color it strongly beats resorts!

What you need to know about hotels

If you like quiet, choose small hotels for locals or rent a house/apartment. Such accommodation is usually a little away from the center. We lived in Kemer in a small hotel Orange Garden – it was quiet and cozy.

If you want friends and company, music, animation and entertainment for the child, a variety of food – choose a complex for tourists with “all inclusive”. In the evenings there is music, sparkling lights, gathering companies.

With the cleaning in Turkish hotels is strange – no one to you every day, as in Asia or Europe, will not come. You need to ask for it at the reception.

Book a hotel in Turkey in advance, because in the high season may not stay the best. And also, being already in the country, you can’t book a hotel on Buking without a VPN, because it is blocked.

Do not be fooled by the beautiful picture and description – before booking carefully read the reviews of tourists, so that then there were no surprises.

You can buy tours online at Travelate and Level.Travel, and book hotels at Hotelluk. We ourselves use these sites for vacation planning.

First Time in Turkey What You Need to Know

This is our hotel in Kemer. If you want to live in silence, choose these small hotels or rent apartments.

Those who go to Turkey for the first time can relax – the country is very safe. The police is very watchful everywhere. The locals treat Russian tourists friendly, and we have never encountered any aggression.

However, observe the standard security measures: in a crowd watch your pockets and bags, do not leave valuables on the beach, do not walk in the evening in revealing clothes, check your change.

Istanbul has a couple of troubled neighborhoods where tourists are not advised to look even during the day – Tarlabaşı and Kasımpaşa. The resorts do not seem to have any dangerous neighborhoods.

The rules are banal: use sunscreen, do not sunbathe in the heat of the day, be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses. Learn how to sunbathe properly.

Drink plenty of water and wash fruits and berries thoroughly.

Before a trip pack a first aid kit for tourists. If you’re traveling on your own, take out insurance online at Cherehapa.

I advise to sunbathe during safe hours – before 11 am and after 4 pm.

Rules of Conduct

It’s simple – behave yourself. Even if you’ve been drinking and it’s your only vacation of the year.

Be polite and smile! Relax and don’t look sullen around.

Important – dress decently, do not walk around town in a bathing suit, in a cafe, in the store. Men with a bare torso is also not allowed.

The main thing you need to know if you’re for the first time in Turkey – how to behave in a mosque. Although most Turks are not very religious, you can not insult believers. During prayers, tourists are not allowed to enter the mosque. Talk in a whisper inside the building. Men need to be in pants and women with their heads covered, shoulders and knees covered. Shoes should be taken off, put in a bag, and taken with you.

Also, you should not take pictures of women in veils, but it’s a rule for the eastern countries.

First time in Turkey tips

Do not walk in the center of the resort in the beach clothes – it is indecent.

What you need to know about the food in Turkey

The food in Turkey is far from refined – mostly meat in different variations, a lot of bread, side dishes and vegetables. Heavy, but delicious food. Unfortunately, it gets boring quickly and promises a considerable weight gain on the sides. In Turkish canteens – lokantasi – the food is more varied and lighter.

My first time in Turkey, I must have tried almost all the local dishes – I liked the cuisine so much. But that was Istanbul – in Kemer, for example, the food is not that good.

I advise to try everything in Turkey, if you are not afraid of getting fat! I especially like dondurma ice cream and oriental sweets.

Once, near Cirali, we found a restaurant near the highway with a panoramic view. And there for only 20 lira (220 rubles) they were serving a shepherd’s breakfast – such a feast for the stomach! They filled the whole table with all sorts of plates, and everything was fresh and natural: olives, butter, goat cheese, honey, vegetables, tahin, freshly baked tortillas, etc. If you find one, be sure to try it.

If you don’t eat much, don’t order a lot at once – they usually bring tortillas, vegetables and herbs to the meal. Sometimes I didn’t feel like eating in the heat, and a small soup with a flatbread was enough for me.

Read more about food in Turkey – in the article I tell you in detail what to try, give prices, names in Turkish, photos and give tips.

Don’t rush to pack a lot of food at once! Usually they bring a free plate of salad, tortillas and two bottles of water to the main course.

Money and bargaining.

Since spring 2022 Russians can no longer use Visa and Mastercard cards abroad, but the MIR payment system works in Turkey. Buying cash dollars or euros in Russia is now virtually impossible, so the easiest option is to go on vacation with a MIR card. Get a Tinkoff Black card of this payment system and easily withdraw money from ATMs in Turkey, which work with the “MIR”: Ziraat Bankası, Vakıfbank, Iş Bankası and DenizBank. You can also pay with your card for your purchases if the terminal belongs to one of these banks. The Black card is now available as a promotional offer; the first year will be free of charge. Turkey in April 2022. Where to relax? Weather and reviews

All write that with the Turks need to haggle and that you can discount the price up to 30%. I do not know, now it is not so. Some categorically do not haggle – such a situation encountered in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Or discounts very little.

Language and communication with the locals

A lot of people in the resorts know English, which is incredibly convenient. The Turks who work with tourists know Russian quite well, too. For example, the man we rented a bike from spoke excellent Russian. Even the seller of orange juice on the street knew a few phrases because his wife is Russian!

Still, we advise not to rely on this and learn at least a few phrases in Turkish – the locals will be nice.

Before the trip I download to your phone useful mobile applications: Russian-Turkish dictionary, phrasebook and Google Translator (do not forget to download the Turkish language, so that the translator works offline).

Turks are pleasant and courteous and like to joke. A little tense enticements to cafes and stores, but if you do not look at the menu and shop windows, you can avoid it. I just smile and walk past.

Also Turks are affectionate, all girls know that. If an unwanted Turk comes on to you, without unnecessary talk, show any ring on your finger – he will immediately retreat. It works without fail, not only with Turks. :)

What you should know if you come to Turkey for the first time

Turkey attracts tourists with its sunny weather, gentle sea, comfortable all-inclusive and democratic prices for recreation. Going to Turkey for the first time you should know what you may encounter there, so as not to make any mistakes.

The Turkish coast: a step by step guide

Anticipation of the trip begins after the travel agency has issued the documents:

  • Vouchers.
  • The contract with the travel agency. .
  • Airline tickets.

Tourist voucher

Example of tourist voucher

The traveler independently goes to the airport on the day of departure, arriving two to three hours before it. Here you go to the registration desk, show your ticket, get boarding pass and hand over your suitcases.

At the passport control passengers’ documents, pockets and hand luggage are checked. You should not have liquids larger than 200 milliliters and sharp objects (nail scissors, files, etc.).

It’s also useful to know what you can’t take on the plane.

If the inspection is successful, you can gain access to the duty-free zone. Here, you will be asked to show your boarding pass when buying goods. Use it to find the necessary departure gate (GATE).

Carry your hand luggage

Hand luggage regulations

Tourists in Turkey again encounter passport control. In this case you do not need a visa. After checking your documents you go and get your luggage. And the “green corridor” will lead to the tour operators’ representatives that can help you with the voucher to find the bus to the reserved hotel.

Istanbul's new airport: how to get to the city center

At the hotel all you need to stay should be given at the reception: keys to the room, a wristband and towel cards. Here you have to be careful! If you look at reviews, inexperienced tourists often try to give rooms worse, for example, with a view of the trash, in the hope that no one will not notice inconsistencies.

If the living conditions were spelled out in the documents, then you can solve the problem quickly, forget about the incident and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the vacation. Otherwise you can placate hotel employee, for example, a $50 bill and get the desired view out the window.

The day after arrival, the traveler should meet with a guide of the tour operator. As a rule, it takes place near the reception at the hotel.

See video: Travel to Turkey through a travel agent.

The guide should get a voucher, tell about the hotel, the sights of the city and offer a trip on excursions. But they, by the way, are more expensive than the travel agents outside the hotel.

No obligations, other than rest and proper behavior, the tourist has no. The next meeting with a representative of the tour operator is scheduled for the end of vacation.

The day before departure, information about the departure should appear on a special stand. And on the day of departure, the vacationer will be reminded of the need to return home, will pick up from the hotel and will take to the airport.

Turkish Climate

Residents of Russia, accustomed to a temperate climate and can not stand the heat, in the high season in Turkey will be hot. In the summer months the air temperature can rise to 40-50 degrees, and with high humidity you may get a number of health problems. Therefore, you must either stock up on medications, or plan your vacation for September and October.

The weather in Turkey is comparable with the Crimean weather, so you should follow some simple rules for a good vacation:

  • Wear cotton clothing.
  • Do not forget about hats.
  • Use sunscreen.
  • Lounge on the beach in the safe hours (before 11 and after 16).
  • Drink plenty of bottled water.

The first thing to think about is safety before the buffet. And don’t forget that Turkish food is full of condiments and sugar, so don’t overdo it. The best defense is to eat in moderation.

A good tip against stomach upsets is to drink only bottled water. From the tap flows only technical liquid, which should not be consumed.

Hotels with 4 and 5 stars usually provide purified water, otherwise you have to go to the local supermarket for it. Price of one bottle of 0.33 starts from one lira.

The question of safety in Turkey also arises outside the hotel. If the tourist is under the responsibility of the staff at the perimeter of the hotel, he is left on his own, and no one will intercede for him when he goes out the door. So it is important to be polite and friendly, so as not to run into trouble.

What to know when you come to Turkey

Memo to tourists, holidaying in Turkey.

Women should remember that under no circumstances should not make eye contact with local men and even more so to be the first to offer a handshake. In the Mediterranean country such gestures are regarded as a call for familiarity and can be misinterpreted. If you want to thank someone, it is enough to put your hand to your chest.

Men should not pay attention to Turkish women or take photos of them without permission. Do not allow yourself to debate about Turkish manners and politics. It does not hurt to learn a few phrases in Turkish:

  • Merhaba – hello.
  • Güle-güle – goodbye.

Resort areas in Turkey are quite safe and customer-oriented, especially people from Russia. Here tourists are usually treated with understanding and try to avoid problems.

The best way to travel to Turkey for the first time is not with rubles, but with Dollars and Euros. Here it is a widely used currency, which is accepted in many shops. Still the majority of transactions are made in Turkish Liras.

The local businessmen can make its rate very mobile and take advantage of the relaxed condition of the tourist and to exchange extremely unprofitable.

There were cases that exchanged 200 dollars, and received half as much. You can solve the problem by calling the police.

Turkish Lira

The national currency of Turkey – the Turkish lira

But in order not to spoil your vacation, it is better to find a reliable exchanger, having asked the guests about it.

You have to be careful with money in cabs as well. Travel only in verified cars with meters and remember that there are no day and night fares, the fare is always and everywhere fixed. It is best to check the price with the driver before the trip.

If a cab is preferred to a rental car, but renters can ask travelers for a solid amount of money after the trip. The argument is always the same: “fines” for violations, which later turn out to be fake.

In this case you just have to ask for proof or call a police squad. The main thing is to be confident and not to give in to provocations.

Cash is best kept in a safe and never take out a large sum in public. Be sure to find someone willing to get rich at your expense.

And on the market there will appear a virtuoso with his hands and pick your pocket unnoticed. By the way, you can save money in the market, haggling. In Turkey they love to do it and they master the art of bargaining to perfection.

Traditions allow for a discount of 10-20%. But before the grocery shop you must know that the price tag indicates the price for 500 grams, not per kilo. If you remember this after the purchase, it will be impossible to take it back.

The use of credit cards should also be considered carefully, because the crooks are not sleeping here either. Hide a pin-code, don’t give the card to anyone, and be sure to check the receipt after the purchase, to make sure of the correct amount.

Turkey in July 2022. Where to relax? Weather, prices, reviews.

To know how much money is better to fly on vacation, think about what you expect to buy. In Turkey there is good shopping: furs, clothing, small souvenirs, spices … Sometimes $100 will be enough for small expenses, and sometimes, and $ 1000 will not be enough.

Tourists who flew to the Mediterranean for the first time usually return with a suitcase full of unusual gifts. Turkey can really surprise the unsophisticated traveler not so much in quality and sophistication, but in price. The country is rich in culture and traditions, a part of which you can bring with you as a souvenir:

  • Hookahs large and small (from $12-$15).
  • Tobacco (two to four dollars). It and hookah are carried exclusively in luggage, not hand luggage.
  • A jezva, or turka (from $5 for an aluminum one to $30 for a copper one).
  • Turkish sweets (rahat-lukum, halva, baklava, kadaif).
  • Gift sets of spices (5-15 dollars).
  • Honey (floral, citrus, cotton, pine, assorted).
  • Olives (three to four dollars).
  • Rose petal jam (two-three dollars).

Spicy foods in Turkey is enough, the tourist has a lot to choose from, so it’s worth relying on your taste and wallet. There are a lot of cheap goods, as well as more expensive. But you have to be choosy, because even the most expensive products can be sold at three times the normal price.

Language barrier

In Turkey, there is no need to fear of being misunderstood. On vacation in the country goes to millions of Russians, and the locals have already mastered the Russian language. You can hear it from sales clerks, drivers, hotel staff.

Those who are somehow associated with the tourism industry and aimed at the Russian consumer, almost all Russian-speaking. If you are flying to Turkey for the first time, and you specifically chose the resort, where there are few compatriots, here you can choose to communicate in English. This language is also known in the country at a decent level.
