Airport of Simferopol closed: how to get to the Crimea now
The airport of Crimea is closed until September 16, 2022. Together with other airports of the Southern Federal District (with the exception of Sochi, Stavropol, Mineralnye Vody). And since the 16th is a tentative date (it is very likely that the deadline will be moved several times), many are wondering “how can you get to the Crimea? Do trains, intercity buses, electric train Anapa – Kerch, etc. go.
In this post, information on how to get to the Crimea. While the airport of Simferopol does not work, and the airspace over the peninsula is closed.
How to get to the Crimea by train
The obvious way to get to the peninsula in the conditions of the closed airport of Simferopol is by train to Crimea . Railway trains for September 2022 run without interruption (temporary restrictions due to sabotage in Dzhankoy area were canceled). And in increased numbers: there are more trains and cars. Russian Railways keeps the prices at the pre-crisis level, but they are still high.

Buy tickets for trains going to the Crimean direction, you can in the station offices and online. The latter is possible on the website of Grand Service Express (grandtrain.ru). Or on Yandex.ru (there in one place are collected flights, trains, hotels, buses + there is a cashback of 10 %). But on the official website of Russian Railways available only the schedule of trains to the Crimea.
In contrast to the plane, the train can get to the Crimea, not only through Simferopol. But also choose Feodosia, Evpatoria, Sevastopol.
As for the point of departure, trains run from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Omsk, Perm, Pskov, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and other cities of Russia. In the summertime, there are more routes and destinations on the schedule. But while the Crimea airport is closed, it is important for us to know that trains go not only from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Although in the direction of the capitals go, of course, the majority of passengers.
Intercity buses to/from the Crimea
Buses from the Crimea to Novorossiysk, Anapa, Krasnodar, Pyatigorsk, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi and even Moscow run on schedule. The Crimean bridge, contrary to numerous fakes, is open. And, according to the authorities, there are no plans to close. Getting to the Crimea by bus is not as comfortable as by train. But in terms of time it is faster.
With the closure of the airport discounts appeared in the Crimea in ‘top’ hotels. Among them are Mriya Resorts & Spa, five-star “Villa Elena”, “Aquamarine” in Sevastopol and “Scarlet Sails” in Feodosia. But the Yalta Intourist stands out. Not only there are no actions, but also the prices are recalculated on a new rate.
Electric trains to the Crimea from the mainland.
The so-called express version of a trip to the Crimea is an electric train from Anapa to Kerch and back . The route is also known as the “rail bus”. Apparently because it consists of only three cars. But for two years of work (March 7, 2022 was just the anniversary) it did not prevent him to carry about 100 000 passengers.
Is it worth choosing this way to get to the Crimea or not, it is up to you to decide. But the route is beautiful! And, given the passage over the Crimean bridge, is also patriotic (which can not be discounted in these turbulent times). So if not now, then plan at least a warm time, it is definitely worth it.
Now there is another electric train from Anapa to Feodosia. Full route Anapa – Kerch South – Feodosia. Departure at 09:18 and 19:55 daily, travel time 4.5 hours. May be useful for those, who do not have rail tickets to the Crimea, but managed to buy a place on the train Moscow – Anapa, for example.
To the Crimea by plane – via Sochi
Going to the Crimea by Sochi is a strange idea. But not in 2022 when the Simferopol airport is closed and there are only a few plane tickets on the side of the parlor compartment or in the compartment near the toilet.
How does this route work? People from remote Russian regions, who need the Crimea more than Sochi, take a plane ticket. And from Sochi they take a bus to the peninsula (to Simferopol, Sevastopol, Yalta, Alushta, Feodosia and other places). Time of trip is 12-13 hours, cost from 3 500 rubles.
By plane to the Crimea – via Mineralnye Vody.
Another way to get to the Crimea by plane (figuratively) is to fly to Mineralvody airport. And then either the train Kislovodsk – Simferopol, or a bus from Pyatigorsk to Simferopol / Sevastopol. Difficult route? We agree, but this year it is easy to get to the Crimea only by car.
Is there any chance for the opening of the Simferopol airport?
There is little chance of a Crimea airport opening in 2022. Mainly because the probability of suppressing the threat from Ukraine before the end of the year is low. But it is better to be guided by the official sources (there have been no forecasts from them yet).
Question – answer.
How long will the Crimean airport be closed?
So far, until September 16, 2022. But the deadline of more than six months is pushed back a week. And there is no point in asking “when the Simferopol airport will be opened” as only the Russian government knows about this. As for the air carriers (S7 and Pobeda), they are not optimistic about the opening of the southern airports soon and have stopped selling tickets to Crimea (source).
Is there a shortage of tickets for trains when the airport is closed?
Yes, with the onset of summer the shortage of rail tickets to the Crimea has peaked. Routes from St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Murmansk, etc. are overloaded. From Moscow it is sometimes simply impossible to get to the Crimea by train. From time to time additional trains appear, and tickets appear out of nowhere. But the head of Crimea S. Aksenov hinted that there is a shortage of about 100 cars.
Are train tickets cheaper than flights to the Crimea?
Unfortunately, no. Travel on the route Moscow – Simferopol (for comparison with the closed airport of Crimea) costs from 5,150 rubles per person in the compartment. A place in a sleeping car will cost from 13,620 rubles.
Do you need QR codes to check into hotels, visit restaurants, etc.?
No, they were cancelled on March 7, 2022.
Which airports are closed in the south, in addition to the airport in Crimea?
Airports in Belgorod, Kursk, Lipetsk, Bryansk, Voronezh, Krasnodar, Gelendzhik, Anapa, Rostov-on-Don and Elista. At the same time you can fly to Stavropol, Mineralnye Vody and Sochi. But, for example, the flight from Sochi to Moscow has become longer due to the closed skies over southern Russia and Ukraine.
My telegram is Krym Fest . I write about holidays and the situation in the Crimea. I live in Sevastopol and share what is happening on the peninsula right now.
All ways to get to Crimea.
I’ve done an overview of all the ways to get to Crimea in 2022. Find out how it will be cheaper and more convenient. I tell you about planes, tours, trains and car rides from Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities. Choose the best way!
Goodbye ferry crossings! Goodbye car queues! Goodbye to incomprehensible and tedious train and bus connections! Finally finished the bridge and running trains – from now on the Crimea is fully connected with the “big land” and all that hell is forever in the past. Now we can choose any convenient way to get to the peninsula and not be afraid to go crazy still on the way to the resort.
The plane is the most convenient and often the cheapest way to get to the Crimea. During the season, direct flights fly from many Russian cities to Simferopol. The prices are usually the same as for the train. There are especially many cheap plane tickets for departures from Moscow and St. Petersburg. From the capitals you can fly to the Crimea and back for 6000-8000 rubles.
Inexpensive (up to 10,000 rubles) you can fly to the Crimea from these cities: Krasnodar, Sochi, Minvody, Rostov-on-Don, Chelyabinsk, Perm, Kazan, Ufa, Tyumen, Nizhny Novgorod. For 12-15 thousand rubles you can find tickets from Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Syktyvkar, Murmansk, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Surgut.
Look for the cheapest airline tickets to Crimea on the Aviasails search engine. It will compare prices of all airlines in a minute and find the dates with the lowest prices. Handy thing. See also my tips: how to buy cheaper airline tickets.
It’s cheapest to fly to the Crimea before the peak season or in early fall, but in July and August tickets can even cost twice as much. September is the best time for a vacation in the Crimea: the water is still very warm, there are three times less people, and the prices are much lower. Take note.
Another tip: buy tickets for the summer in advance. It is best 3 to 6 months before the holiday. So few people do, and in vain – you can save a lot.
If the tickets to Simferopol for your dates is too expensive, check the cost of the flight to Anapa or Krasnodar. Yes, so you’ll have to get to the resort in the Crimea by bus, but sometimes you can save a lot.
Search for cheap air tickets to the Crimea:
To find yourself in the Crimea above the clouds is not only on board the plane – such views are also available from the tops of its mountains. This is us on the famous summit of Ai-Petri near the South Coast.
There are a lot of cheap tours to the Crimea sold from Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major cities. Even in the summer there are tours for two people for a week for only 20-25 thousand rubles. The price includes the flight, accommodation and transfers. Meals in such cheap tours are not included, and lodging is usually very modest, I would even say spartan. But if you set the bar a little higher you’ll get decent options with accommodation in decent hotels at popular resorts, not in a cabin somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Such tours cost from 30 thousand for two. Do you agree that the price tag is adequate. So a vacation by voucher – one way to cheap to go to the Crimea, even in summer. Read my review of the cost of tours in the Crimea – there I detail explained what the price depends on.
Look for cheap tours to the Crimea at Travelata or Level.Travel. They are reliable online travel stores with low prices. I buy tours only there. And best of all read my tips: how to buy tours cheaper so that you don’t overpay travel agents.
In 2022, you can get to the Crimea by train. In the olden days we heroically made it a hundred times more complicated way: a few days in stuffy old cars to Krasnodar, there was a bus, then a ferry ride, then another bus ride to the resort. That was hell! Especially when there was a storm in the strait and we with thousands of people stood in a terrible queue for the ferry. I hope you didn’t go to the Crimea then and experienced all these horrors.
Now everything is easy and convenient. From Moscow to Simferopol every day there is a double-decker train “Tavria”. There are still options with a change in Krasnodar, but it is really inconvenient. On the way the direct train spends a little more than a day, and tickets are quite inexpensive (one way price):
- from 3,300 ₽ – top shelf in the compartment,
- from 3,600 ₽ for the coach,
- from 5,000 ₽ – lower shelf in a compartment.
You can buy a train ticket on Yandex.Travel or on tutu.ru. The latter is more convenient because there you can read people’s reviews of each train and even carriage to choose the most comfortable and clean.
Comrades, choose your train and car carefully! Believe me, it’s very important, I’ve ridden many times and I know what I’m saying. There are two types of trains: old trains and new ones. If you get into an old car, the trip will turn into a real ordeal: the stuffiness in the carriages, overcrowding, screaming children, no showers, the smell of instant noodles and sweaty socks. However, if you are a fan of thrills, then go for it. And for the rest I advise to choose only new carriages with conditioner and bio-toilets. If there are no new cars, fly to the Crimea by plane.
An alternative way: to get to the Crimea on a single ticket. Read at the link of our instructions. The essence of this option is that you get to Krasnodar or Anapa by train, and then you are transferred to a bus to the Crimean resorts. Now this process is fine-tuned, there is a bridge, and inconvenience and time costs are minimized.
How to find inexpensive housing in the Crimea. Do not hope to find decent accommodation on the spot, book in advance on reliable services. I advise to look for the hotels at Hotelluk, and to look for apartments and houses at Sudok.ru and Tvil.ru. There you will find the best accommodation at the best price, and you can read the real reviews of the tourists. Check out our reviews:
I often travel by train in Russia. If you choose the right carriage, the trip will go smoothly and even pleasantly.
If you are going to the Crimea not only to seal on the beach, but also to see beautiful places, then unequivocally come by car. It is very cool! You can visit any sights without any buses and excursions. I went to the Crimea by car with friends, took them all around the peninsula in three weeks, showed them the coolest places – everyone was thrilled. We drove from Perm for three days – I was fine, we go to such auto-expeditions to different parts of our country every year.
From Moscow and the region, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Sochi, Volgograd, Samara and many cities in the European part of Russia you can get to the Crimea in just one or two days. If you go on vacation with family or company, you will spend less on gasoline than on any even the cheapest plane or train tickets. In the Crimea, gasoline is a couple of rubles more expensive, but there you will not have such great mileage to worry about this. Many people also travel to the Crimea from the Urals, some even from Western Siberia.

This is us stopping by a poppy field in the Crimea – there are many of them. To see such beauty, come to the Crimea in May.
So, how to get to the Crimea in 2022?
If previously it was normal to get only by plane, but now we have a lot of convenient options. There is a comfortable direct train, there is a car bridge for travel by car, and there are inexpensive direct flights from many cities.
From Moscow and St. Petersburg it is cheaper and easier to get to the Crimea by plane. In other cases it all depends on what city you live in: from Siberia and the Urals it is better to fly by plane, from the cities of the European part of the country it is more convenient to go by train, on the single ticket or by car.
By the way a car in the Crimea in general is very useful and saves money. For example, you can rent a house far from the beach, go there by car and so save thousands of rubles. And even by car you can go to the secluded beaches in the countryside, where there are no crowds of people. Well, and save money on tours, the more we have already made an interesting route of travel in the Crimea. In general, I recommend to think about this trip, even if you need to pilyat to the sea two or three days. The time costs will win back at the expense of complete freedom and economy.
If you don’t have a car of your own or don’t want to drive that far, rent a car in the Crimea at a convenient service Localrent.com. The price starts at 1000 rubles per day.
Have a nice vacation in the Crimea! Ciao!
