Vietnam resorts: where to go in winter

Vietnamese winter is characterized by dry weather, precipitation is rare and in small amounts. The air temperature is lower than in summer.

In winter, the best resorts in southern Vietnam: the air temperature is +25. +28 ° C, the sea is heated to the same temperature. According to reviews of tourists, the best weather for a beach holiday in Vietnam from December to February – on Condao Island and Phu Quoc (how to get there), as well as in the resorts of Phan Thiet and Mui Ne.

In Nha Trang – the most russified resort in the country – it is windy and a little damp at this time, especially in December, and the water and air temperature there is a little lower. However, we had a great vacation in Nha Trang from December to March: swimming, sunbathing, riding a motorcycle, sightseeing.

The north of Vietnam is not suitable for a beach holiday, in winter it’s too cold – the temperature drops to +15 ° C or even lower. In the mountains in the north is particularly cold (about +5 ° C), at the tops there may be snow. Hanoi in winter is cool and overcast. However, you can go here to see pagodas and temples, visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, go to the silk and snake villages.

The center of the country is warmer than the north, but swimming is not too pleasant because of the strong waves. Sometimes it rains, so vacationing in Da Nang at this time is not recommended. We were in Da Nang on New Year’s Eve and it was windy so we did not swim.

What to do on vacation

Entertainment . In addition to the standard beach activities, the resorts offer fishing, diving, surfing, elephant rides, golf. In Nha Trang there is an amusement island with a water park and attractions – Vinpearl, a favorite place for family entertainment for many tourists. Read more about holidays in Nha Trang and the best beaches of this resort.

Excursions . Vacations in Vietnam in winter will appeal to sightseeing lovers. Go on excursions to the ancient temple complexes of Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet, Hue or Hoi An. Visit a coconut candy factory in Ben Tre Province or the Coconut Prison on Phu Quoc Island. Visit a pearl farm. Take a river cruise along the Mekong Delta. See the beauty of Halong Bay. Go to mountainous Vietnam: Dalat, Daklak, Sapa.

Health and Beauty . Those who want to improve their health, you can take a course of therapeutic procedures – the country is rich in mineral springs and healing mud, so many expensive hotels contain its own SPA-salon. In addition, you may take advantage of the services of specialized centers of traditional medicine. There are such centers in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phan Thiet.

Diving and surfing . Unfortunately, from December to February diving becomes impossible because of the too rough sea, but underwater flora and fauna of the South China Sea is full of variety and can meet the demands of any diver. Relevant centers are in many popular places: Phu Quoc, the Con Dao Archipelago, Nha Trang Bay, etc. But fans of surfing can fully enjoy their favorite entertainment, winter is well suited for this pastime. If you like quieter waves, you can choose the resort of Vungtau in the southeast of the country.

Cuisine – Local culinary traditions may slightly discourage unprepared traveler, but some lovers of the exotic agree to such adventures and bravely drink snake blood, eat soup from it, etc. In the markets and in special stores you can buy jars with alcoholized crawling (and not only) representatives of the animal world, which are sold as medicinal tinctures. Our tourists buy them as a souvenir as a keepsake.

Holidays . Most holidays in the country are celebrated according to the lunar calendar, so the date is floating. Vietnamese New Year (Tet) usually takes place in late January – early February, and the celebration lasts several days. During this period there are many tourists, as well as on Catholic Christmas (December 25), and prices for tours traditionally go up. Tet is celebrated noisily and colorfully, with colorful fireworks and huge dragon parades. The next day, the major cities become sparsely populated, the locals go to rest at the resorts, and most shopping centers and cafes are closed.

Weather in Vietnam in January

Tourist reviews of winter vacations in Vietnam

Based on the numerous reviews of tourists about Vietnam, we can say that this country promises a pretty good beach vacation with a rich excursion program. Theft occurs, but not to a greater extent than in other tourist destinations. To avoid excesses, it is better to keep valuables in a safe and not carry too much money. The locals are quiet and friendly, although some tourists are annoyed by periodic requests to buy something from vendors (the vendors are, however, completely unobtrusive).

The traffic in the cities is heavy, the traffic flow is dense, and the rules of the road here understand the peculiar way. It is quite dangerous to cross the street on a crosswalk: bikers don’t stop, but try to bypass pedestrians. We recommend to cross busy streets bravely and at a constant speed, raising your hand up, thus asking drivers to slow down. The main thing – do not panic, do not move jerkily and do not stop, so as not to provoke an accident.

Vietnam is an unusual country: 42 quirks and peculiarities that surprised us.

It is worth being prepared that the climate of the south, center and north are very different. Resting in the south in t-shirts, when traveling to the north should be equipped with a warm jacket. Also recommend checking the availability of hot water and heaters in the room when checking in, as in the north at this time is quite cool (we in Hanoi and Halong in January was very cold in hotels without a heater).

Remember that in Asian countries there is a risk of catching, for example, Dengue fever (but it rarely happens), so just in case we advise to take out insurance. Travel insurance →

In general, beach holidays in Vietnam in winter, according to tourist reviews and our personal opinion, inexpensive and pleasant. In December, January and February you can enjoy the warmth, get a good tan and swim, eat fresh seafood and exotic fruits at reasonable prices and enjoy the local attractions.

Climate and Seasons to Visit Vietnam

Climate and seasons to visit Vietnam

Before planning a trip to Vietnam, we suggest you read the information about the climate in a particular area of the country to try to avoid adverse weather. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that in recent years Vietnam, like the rest of the world, has experienced significant climatic anomalies, so in practice the weather may be somewhat different from what it should be in theory.

General Background

Vietnam’s geographic location and topography have largely determined the local climatic features. From north to south Vietnam stretches for 1750 km, almost through the whole country passes the mountain range Truong Son, which prevents the penetration of humid south-west winds into the territory of Vietnam from the west and protects it from heavy rains. Only 7-8 km far from the temperate belt, the northern part of Vietnam reminds a little of the temperate belt, but the flora and fauna is distinctly tropical, like in the south. Although the entire country is located in the tropical belt of the northern hemisphere, the climate in some parts of the country may vary from frosty winters to mild subequatorial weather, virtually unchanged throughout the year. Climatic zones change each other not only depending on latitude and longitude, but also on the altitude: about one-third of Vietnam is above 500 m above sea level and has a subtropical climate, part – above 2000 m – a temperate climate.

Another factor influencing the climate of Vietnam is the monsoon. Vietnam is located in the East Asian Monsoon Zone. Its weather is determined mainly by two monsoons. The winter one comes from the northeast between October and March and brings wet, cold winters to all areas north of Nha Trang, but dry, warm and sunny weather to the south. From April or May through October, the country is exposed to the southern and southwestern monsoons, which “absorb” moisture at the intersection of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand. The southwest monsoon brings warm, humid weather throughout the country except for areas protected by mountains (such as the central coastal lowlands and the Red River Delta).

Between July and November, strong, unpredictable typhoons often form over the ocean to the east of Vietnam, striking central and northern parts of the country and causing severe damage to residential buildings, economic facilities, and infrastructure.

If we talk about the climate of Vietnam in general, it is customary to distinguish two seasons: the cool dry season and the hot rainy season. However, the duration and terms of these seasons in different parts and regions of the country are different because of the considerable length from north to south, so Vietnam can be conditionally divided into 3 climatic zones with different weather features that should be considered when planning a trip: the northern, central and southern. Due to the diversity of the relief and the change of wind direction during the year, there are significant internal differences in the zones themselves.

Most of Vietnam receives an average of about 1,500 to 2,000 mm of rainfall per year. In some parts of the high plateau of central Vietnam, it reaches almost 3,300 mm per year. There are about 100 rainy days a year, with most of the rain falling during the rainy season and only about 10% during the dry season. The average amount of sunshine is 1500-2000 hours. Droughts are very rare and in isolated areas. Humidity levels fluctuate around 80%.

Due to the strong influence of the Northeast Monsoon, average temperatures in Vietnam are lower than in other Asian countries at the same latitude. Compared to them, winters in Vietnam are colder and summers are less hot. The annual amplitude of air and water temperature is small, with an average annual temperature of +22 to 27° C. The average annual solar radiation is 100 kcal/cm².

However, the main feature of Vietnamese weather is its stability and favorable characteristics, the successful combination of which attracts visitors from all over the world.

Climate and seasons to visit Vietnam

Favourable seasons to visit

Although most of Vietnam has generally favorable climatic and natural conditions for people, when choosing the time and place to visit, you should consider both the seasonal factor and the geographic and climatic characteristics of the area. Thanks to the climatic diversity in Vietnam you can find an area with favorable weather all year round.

To visit the northern regions

The climate of the northern region can not be called tropical, because the difference between the average maximum and average minimum temperatures is 14 – 16 °. In addition to the dry and wet seasons, the north has four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall.

Summers are hot and humid. During the summer months, the north of Vietnam is subject to occasional destructive typhoons and floods, the worst of which occur here in June and August. The equatorial summer monsoon period, blowing from the Pacific Ocean, lasts from May through October in the Hanoi area. From July to September, about 80% of the annual precipitation is normal (300 mm in Hanoi in each of these months). During the hottest months, the average maximum temperature in the capital is 31 – 32 ° C, and the registered absolute maximum of 42.8 ° C.

Winters in the northern areas are wet and cool. The cold northwestern monsoon affects at this time. In the plains, including deltas, average temperatures during the three winter months are 17-20°C (+10 – 12°C at night). But there are days when the thermometer column falls below 5 ° C. Around Hanoi, located at an absolute height of about 5 meters in the coolest season air heats up to 14 – 16 ° C, night temperatures can drop to 2.7 ° C. Winters in the mountains are long and harsh, frosts occur in the border ridges. In the Shapa area, at an altitude of about 1,570 m, and in other elevated areas, it sometimes even snows. If you plan to visit northern Vietnam in winter, bring warm clothes: a wool sweater, jacket, pants or jeans. This is especially true for those who want to visit the mountainous regions or cruise on Halong Bay.

The period from October to April of the following year is considered the dry season: it rarely rains heavily. From late January to mid-March, however, a constant drizzle, which the Vietnamese call “rain dust” (usa phung) is common. The rainy season begins in May and ends in September with prolonged rainstorms lasting many days. The average annual precipitation is 1800 mm.

New Year - 2023 in Vietnam: Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne and Phan Thiet

April and September-October are the most favorable time to visit Hanoi and the surrounding areas, when the weather is warm enough for walking and swimming in the sea, but not so hot as to cause discomfort. For people with high blood pressure and who cannot tolerate the heat, it is not recommended to plan a trip to the areas of northern Vietnam between June and August.

To visit central areas.

In central Vietnam, the difference in temperatures is not as noticeable as in the north due to the significant influence of the Truong Son Mountains and their spurs, which serve as a barrier to the humid southwestern winds in summer. Central Vietnam has two main seasons: dry and rainy. In addition, if you are planning to visit cities such as Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Dalat, you should consider the climatic differences between the coastal plain part and the mountainous areas.

The winter months are quite cool in the northern part of central Vietnam, with temperatures below 20°C in January. South of 16°N is warm all year round, and the temperature regime is similar to southern Vietnam: the average air temperature is +25 to 27° C. The coldest month in central Vietnam, near Hue, is January (+17 – 24 ° C), the hottest is July (+25 – 34 ° C).

The rains begin in August and reach their maximum intensity in October and November, when the rest of the country has clear weather. It is possible that the wet period lasts till January. The northern half of this climatic region, especially the eastern ridges and foothills of the Truong Son, receives more rainfall (up to 3000-3500 mm on average per year) and the coastal plains receive less rainfall. In the coastal zone, powerful typhoons are possible from July to November, the strength of which decreases towards the south. The dry season on the central coast lasts from May to October.

The best tourist season in Hue and its suburbs is from November to April next year. In September and October, one should not plan a trip to Da Nang and nearby resorts, as typhoons and storms occur during this time.

To visit the southern areas

South Vietnam has a typical tropical monsoon climate. Northern winds do not penetrate here, so the temperature regime is stable throughout the year: between the hottest and coolest months the temperature difference does not exceed 3 – 4 ° C, the average temperature ranges from 26 ° C in December to 29 ° C in April. In the south of Vietnam, even in November at noon, the streets are empty for a few hours because of the tropical heat.

There are two seasons – wet and dry. During the wet season, which begins in April-May and ends in October-November, usually more than 90% of the annual norm of precipitation (equal to about 2000 mm) falls, and during the second – only 7%. The rainy season in southern Vietnam is different than what our tourists usually imagine. It rains for 15 to 30 minutes a day (usually in the afternoon), then the sun shines again, and if there are overcast days, it is even good, because it brings a little cooler weather. In general, the weather during the rainy season is more easily tolerated by tourists than the dry season.

The dry season lasts from November to May. Sometimes there are droughts, and typhoons hit the coast, and flooding is not uncommon in the fall.

In the southeastern parts of southern Vietnam, the climate is tropical, monsoon with high humidity and temperature. In the southwest, the climate is similar to the north of the country, but average temperatures are higher. People who can’t stand the heat are advised to plan their holidays at the resorts in the southwestern part of the south of Vietnam.

The average annual temperature in Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon) is +27°C: the daily average in April +30°C, in January +21°C. The absolute lowest temperature recorded in Saigon is +14 ° C. Humidity is 80%. The Vietnamese unanimously agree that the climate of Ho Chi Minh City is more favorable for health and is easily tolerable than the climate of Hanoi. This should be taken into account if you are planning a long stay in Vietnam.

Climate and seasons to visit Vietnam

To visit mountainous areas

Because of the peculiarities of the relief in Vietnam, there are several areas with their own special microclimate: Xapa (Laocai Province), Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc Province), Dalat (Lam Dong Province). These areas have a temperate climate, while Laitiau and Sonla provinces have a continental climate. All of these areas are excellent places for recreation and eco-tourism.

When preparing for the trip, note that the highland areas of Vietnam are much cooler than the lowlands. In the summer, this circumstance is favorable to visit, because there is no exhausting heat, but in winter temperatures can be very low, which, combined with strong gusty wind will make your stay in the mountains unpleasant. Don’t forget light windbreakers for evening walks in summer, and warm woollen jackets if you plan on visiting the mountainous regions in winter.

When visiting the high mountain resort of Shapa, keep in mind that even in the summer the nights here are quite chilly. This coolness combined with the amazing mountain scenery and clean air attracts a large number of both Vietnamese and foreign tourists. The climate is temperate here, the average annual temperature ranges from 15 to 18 ° C. In winter the temperature drops to zero degrees, and in some years even lower, the constant fog and drizzling rain create a dreary mood. The dry season in Shap lasts from January to June. The coldest months are January and February. From March to May the weather is just perfect, summer is also a good time, although rainy.

Dalat, like the rest of the central plateau, is much colder than the Mekong Delta and coastal strip. Due to its location at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level, Dalat has a year-round climate that is close to temperate. It is called the “city of eternal spring” because from November to March, the daily high in Dalat is usually below +24 ° C and the minimum is +15 ° C. The highest temperature does not exceed +32 ° C, and the lowest – +5 ° C. In the evening and morning hours it can be quite cold, even for Europeans. November through April is the dry season in Dalat. In summer it rains, usually in the afternoon, sometimes with hail. Sunny days occur throughout the year. Unlike the usual tropics, the air around Dalat is clearly ozone fresh, with an average humidity of 82%. There are never typhoons here, although strong winds occasionally occur due to the influence of seaside typhoons. This climate makes this city a popular resort and a real flower garden.

The mountain resort of Tam Dao, located 900 meters above sea level and surrounded by primary rain forests, is best visited in the fall. This is the dry season and the days are pleasantly cool. In the summer there are heavy downpours, and in the winter it is quite cold. There are often fogs, sometimes so thick that you can no longer see anything within three steps of yourself. A unique feature of the local climate is also that during one day you can observe all four seasons: in the morning is cool and windy, like in spring, during the day is hot and stuffy, like in summer, in the evenings blows northeasterly wind, like in autumn, at night is quite cold, like in winter.

Climate and seasons to visit Vietnam

For diving, surfing and other water sports

The most popular resorts in Vietnam among diving enthusiasts are traditionally considered to be the islands of Nha Trang Bay, Hong Ong Island (Whale island) in Van Phong Bay, Phu Quoc Island and Con Dao Archipelago in the south of Vietnam, Phan Thiet, Da Nang and Hoi An in central Vietnam.

The best season for diving in Nha Trang and Wale Island is from February to October. From mid-November begins the rainy season, which lasts until about early January. In addition, from December to February the ocean here is quite rough, so this time diving is difficult.

On the island of Phu Quoc the best diving season lasts from mid-November to early June: at this time the sea is clear, and the weather is mostly clear. At the end of May and early June, the sea is gradually becoming cloudy, the rainy season begins. In September-October the sea begins to lighten, but the weather is not yet stable, with variable cloudiness.

The archipelago Condao is located in the open sea, far from the mainland (180 km south of Vungtau), in a place where the warm and cold sea currents converge to form an isolated climatic micro-system. The Kondao Islands offer ideal natural conditions for water sports, including diving and snorkeling almost all year round. From June to September, frequent gusty winds attack the islands in the western part of the archipelago, while the eastern part is sheltered from the winds. In September, the sea currents and wind direction change, bringing bad weather already on the eastern side until January. The rest of the time, the weather remains calm and clear throughout the archipelago. Clear sea. The average annual temperature is +27° C.

The city of Phan Thiet is located in an arid region with a characteristic tropical climate. It is sunny, not very windy, rarely sees typhoons and storms, no fog, and the average temperature per year – +26-27 ° C. December through February is cooler than the rest of the months (average temperature is +25.5° C). The hottest months are April and May, when temperatures rise to 29° C. August to November is the wet season with heavy, very short showers in the afternoon. The sea is clear from late March to April, when the strong winds die down – a dream for surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers – until August. In September, the sea starts to get murky and in the following months is not good for snorkeling.

The ideal place for kiteboarding during the whole season, which lasts from October to March, is Mui Ne – a bay on the southeastern coast of Vietnam, located 10 km from Phan Thiet town. The advantage of the local climate is the stability of the wind direction during this period, every day blows flat, strong wind at an angle of 45 degrees to the shore. Beside excellent conditions for skiing it provides safety – if the kite falls in the water, the current and wind will in any case take it to the sandy beach.
